Anyone using assemble furniture as their fishtank cabinet? Those from Ikea or Carrefour. Saw some nice one at a quite cheap price, able to fit 2-3ft tank. Are they reliable? Sorry if I sound cheapo cause it's the only way to maintain the hobby without nagging by girlfriend. Advice pleaseee...

No they can't take the weight. If you really insist, you must add bracings.

Is it made from compress wood shred or solid wood? If it is from wood shred, better not. It wont be able to take the weight.

Most assemble furniture are make on wood shred I guess, that's why can keep the price low. But I'm saying 2-3ft tank, not advisable too?

3ft definitely not, 3ft with full of water is very-very heavy. Make mater worst, this type of wood is not water proof.

    That bad?

But my office's bookshelf(from Ikea) able to hold 2 1ft nano tanks + 1 cube tank and it's been half year, still quite solid. 3 tanks together sure carry the weight of a 2ft I think...

I will never risk it as I cannot imagine the consequences. Broken glass, flood, extinction of your prized collection of apisto, discus, plecos, CRS, etc. Plus an irate wife over stale meat in the freezer caused by tripped power circuit.

I was at C328 asking auntie if she sells just the cabinet for a 2ft. She suggested i go buy a shoe cabinet, as its cheaper and will serve the same purpose

Told her I didnt wanna get shoe cabinet as they use compressed wood chip. Was shocked when auntie told me the normal fish tank cabinet for 2ft are using the same compressed wood chip, so there is not much of a difference

She says she is bring in some self assemble GEX (I think) 2ft cabinet, they are using compressed wood chip too. But that one will cost about 2 blue notes. Shoe cabinets are cheaper

So if C328 auntie is telling the truth, I think the Ikea and Carrefour cabinet might be sufficient if you are just planning for nothing greater then a 2 feet. Dont know about 3 feet tanks

That really surprise me! Guess it's a good news for me, hehe... Take a picture from office today, think the bookshelf are more durable than normal shoe cabinet since they are much thicker. Been thinking to get the same one for my 2.5ft...

From your pics, the bookshelf has uprights(vertical board) to strengthen. Ikea has those heavy duty racks which I think you can try. I am using those beside tables from Ikea for my cube tanks.

Thanks bro Jaws. Cost is the main issue here that's why checking the reliability for cheap assemble goods.

Off topic: Sorry for the back out of your Eheim Pro II 2026 previously. Friend advise that's too powerful to run in my 2.5ft heavy planted tank, my apology. Good luck for your sales

That should cover all the Juwel tanks too.
But as mentioned, you will need to keep the water from the cabinet.
Do note for larger tanks, there are usually solid wood pieces for the main support.

No prolem. Not really urgent to sell it anyway Btw, I used it on my 3ft tank and its too weak for my 4.5ft.

The racks I talking about is pretty good and strong. One rack can put quite a number of tanks if I am not wrong. Do check the load limit just to be sure.

I put newspaper on Ikea table and they change shape. I put my LCD screen on a computer table bought from Ikea, and the table top change shape. Hehehehe

I would not try fish tank on that.

    Cheers, Christophe

Hey bro, I have the same bookshelf from Ikea in my office and it is quite strong and stable. However, you will have problem if there is even a leak in one of the tank or even filters. The water will soften the wood and if the affected are is big enough, think the whole shelf might even collapse after a while. Do be careful!

I'm now having another older bigger model of this book shelf at home with 3 x 1.5ft tank on it. There a leak from my filter a few months back and the base is flooded with water. I can now see the compressed wood chip of the book shelf slowly chipping off... A few more times and I'll be in big trouble...

Warmest Regards from Merviso aka Merv Soh
