I have observed this as well whenever i do a water change the last time i kept shrimps in my tank. By the way, i lost all my shrimps within 7 weeks.
Noticed that after adding some water to top up. A couple of the shrimps will swim to the water surface, and they seemed to be skirting the brim of the water. After that they will crawl on the side of the tank and then go back to the ground. Is this normal?
Are they reacting to the water changes. I only add about 1-3% of water each day to compensate for the evaporation. Is this OK?
The water I used is from a basin of water which I filled up the day before.
Kindly advise this newbie, you veterans out there.

This is normal behavior after a waterchange. A 1-3% water top off won't harm anything. They are reacting to the suitable change in water parameters and water temperature. You do want to change out the water at least once every two weeks though. Topping off doesn't remove any waste products, and without a water change the toxins will compound and concentrate.

With such ultra sensitive creatures, its always nice to have a tub to 'treat' the water to the parameters of your tank so as not to shock them.
