So I set up a new tank - 3 ft, with 4 tubes of T5 lights + the two flourescent cheapo lightbulbs that came with the tank. And my crypts seem to be doing alright - at least I see no transparent leaves. However my 'Hardy' vallis has begun to melt. Why... why of all plants... does my vallis melt? I know it's a cheap plant but this is a serious case of ***-ery when the vallis of all things is the first to croak. It's like killing a java fern >_<. How??

That happen if you plant Valling to deep. Also normally Vallis shed/melt the outher leave when fisrt planted, new leave should form from inside. Did you does Excel? It is known that excel cause vallis to melt.

Can show us your tank pictures? It would help us identify what you miss! 2-3bps is good, and good flow is important.

1bps is not enough for a big tank. I'm running 3bps for 1.5ft. Of course i got alot of plants.

Hi Kristen, CO2 supply is good enough. You don't have to add Excel but keep it for eliminating BBA. Its a superb weapon against this nasty algae.

With CO2 inject, i only add 1 time Excel. Too much of Excel some plants may melt.

I actually did add excel only once. Oh well, will see how on monday - maybe it's just the plants settling in? I remember with my first planted tank, I had a number of plants melting on me. Namely HC and Watersprite.

And suddenly my own Vallis' fate finally makes sense. I replanted the entire bunch - so it melts the old leaves. I also dose various tubs of the Excel range - thus further 'killing' my Vallis.

If i continue dosing will the plant actually die off? Or do i have to stop dosing it to let it re-cooperate?

I shall be keeping tabs on this thread, partly thanks to Kristen for being a part of bringing such an issue to my attention - by starting this thread

HC is difficult to convert from emerse to submerse. but it is strange that watersprite is also melting, unless itis try to adapting from emerse to submerse. you can take a photo and post it here. watersprite emerse and submerse leaves look different.

I would suggest to cut off the whole leaves that melt, you can try to pull the valis a bit out of the substrate. Stop dosing Excell. By the way do not cut Vallis tip, because the whole leave will slowly melt once you do that.

Okay - will try out these on Monday when I get to school. Perhaps I stuffed the vallis too deep into the substrate XD Will also get a pic on Monday!

Ok Shadow. I shall remove all Vallis and trim all existing leaves that are melting. Leaving the very small crinkled new leaves to grow up. I shall stop dosing Excell for the forseeable future untill they pick up.

And i already learnt the hardway not to cut Vallis leaf tips, in the past i did this regularly haha. They got too long, what can i say! In future i shall stop this...

Okay, so I didn't manage to cut anything, since I was so busy at school today. Either way, got a pic of the tank, if it helps. As you can see, my vallis has turned to mulch >_<
