Planted tanks shouldn't smell. Unless your wife is ultra sensitive to fishy smell.
If there is, you can always use charcoal. It'll absorb all impurities & odor.

can try activated carbon also known as processed charcoal. Half the dosage will be fine. Although i put the whole thing in, crystal clear water too. Plant growth for me doesnt really affect much. Good luck!![]()
Hi,
i thought that activated carbon somehow absorbs the liquid fertilisers that we feed to our hungry plants as well?
Cheers!
Planted tanks generally do not smell. I even have a huge planted pond inside our house and it does not smell when things run normally.
Smell usually comes from high, unprocessed concentration of fish waste within the water.
The trick to keeping the waste controlled is to plant heavily and to build up your fish stock slowly as the tank gains bacterial population/equilibrium. Use reasonable filtration if dont go low bioload route. While waiting so, people sometimes add activated carbon during the first few weeks to help remove excess waste as the tank cannot handle it yet. In the long run, keep your bioload reasonable and feed as needed only.
Other than adding ac, once your bb is established, there won't be any smell.
Is activated carbon a tablet?
you can also put in bbq used charcoal. it works for me at least clear off the waste smell. or you have to do 20% water change every week.
activated carbon is like charcoal (black) comes in a few form. like chips or sticks but basically still processed charcoal. For the matter that it absorbed our liquid ferts. yea i believe they will but i'll always try to keep my liquid ferts minimal and try to keep my ferts in the substrate to prevent algae boom. Oh yea and remember to enjoy your hard work, admire the beauty![]()
