    Hi

Just want to ask a question. Will fishes like rummy nose, rasboras, cardinals, neons, etc school under normal circumstances?

I can get them to school after a fright, or when I come near to the tank and they swim from one end to the other, or when there is a predator?

My tank is 4 feet, and I have about 100 rummy nose inside. But they do not always school. No sick fishes, just each one doing its own business I guess.

    Cheers, Christophe

my mileage is that when they feel threatened, they school
ie too little fish in too big a tank,
    constant traffic walking past tank,
or other bigger fish in tank

otherwise, once they are used to the environment and feel safe/secure, they tend to do their own thing

You can add in a couple of large, harmless but active fish like Rainbow fish or Redline barb and they should school.

You should be complacent and stick to the plan or you'll not last 5 years.

It is not a condition that they will school. Bryan was just making a suggesting. Next thing you know, the rainbow become complacent!

rummynose and cardinal usually school very tightly eventhough they are the only species in the tank. Weekly maintenance usually enough to scare them off.

Get a combo of Altum and Cardinal and you will see cardinal school most of the time.

If you want to find out what type of fish really school, go to a LFS with many tanks of different types of fish and wave at them and you will find out.

One out from those species said is truly schooling fish. The rummy nose tetra.

They would always form a school (or in some cases, several schools when your setup is insanely huge).

The school would be much tighter when it is feeding time, or when they are just slightly disturbed.

The reason why your rummy nose did not form a nice pack of school is probably due to the fact that the tank might be too cramped and densely planted. As in too many of the fish and too little space, be it free space to gather or overall space.

I keep 120s rummy nose, always forming good school(s) most of the time because they are in a 3000 liter system. I have another good school of 30s, and they are inside a 1000 liter system.
