Seachem does that to certain species of plants AND fauna too.
Vallisneria is also known to be badly affected by Excel.
I'd advise use with caution in the use of Excel for algae extermination.
For low-tech tanks you can use smaller percentage dose to minimize the effects on sensitive species.

Sorry to hear that alex76 about your riccia... WOW! Never knew that Seachem's Excel could be so 'lethal' to riccia & some other flora/fauna... Were still happily dosing it into all my tanks... Better be more careful about my dosing in the future...

Yup. Do not overdose on the seachem excel. I once was happily squirting onto the BBA as well, in the end, killed most of my fishes and alot of plants.

Flourish Excel is an organic carbon. It provides the plants with a source of carbon for growth, just like CO2 supplement that you inject for your tank. It just happens to have an algaecide-like affect on algae, and as with many algaecides, overdosing will have an effect on your sensitive plants.

Flourish is a plant supplement, containing micro elements, trace elements and other nutrients for plant growth.

There is nothing to be paranoid about as long as you follow the specified instructions. If you see sensitive plants melt, then try avoiding direct injecting on the plant, dose in the water as per instructions every alternate days (as advised by Seachem, http://www.seachem.com/support/FAQs/...Excel_faq.html).

It is NOT an algaecide and Seachem does not promote it or sell it for that purpose. It is a risk you have to take if you overdose or use it as an algaecide.

I juist started dosing with Flourish Excel last Saturday. It said 5ml per 40L for new tanks and then 5ml per 200L. I have a 3 foot tank and the water is about 120L. I added 2 capfuls and everything seems fine, plants, fish and Malayan shrimp. I have not seen any effect on the algae though.

After reading and the links above, I realised that no one has come forward to say that Excel is safe for daily skin contact even in diluted form through the acquarium water.

If Glutaraldehyde inhibits egg development and is used for embalming, etc, just like formaldehyde, would it not be a cancer risk for us to use it as most of us dip our arms into the fish tank almost daily?

I believe the instructions are referring to pure Excel dosage. Please do discount it if you're using canister CO2 at the same time.
