Hi, jus wanna do a simple survey, are the ocean free brand n extendboy brands the only ones avail on the mkt? How much is reasonable to pay for a 36W PL, $50? and are the replacement tubes expensive and are there any cheaper places to get these 36W tubes cos C328 quoted $22?? Most light shops i ask dun seem to carry these tubes... Thx!!

Tubes are at about $14 at NA for the Osram brand and the other cheaper brand is at $10.... 36W PL light for 2 ft fitting.

The single 36W with normal ballast is at $40. With E-ballast is at $60.

Ocean Free is normally iron core ballast... one of the simplest ways to tell is to see if it has a starter?

    Allen,

starters are only required for FL tubes, PL do not need starters....

And the only way to tell is to remove the covering and check the ballast itself, it is written on the ballast. Another way is by weight. E-ballast are much lighter than a normal ballast.

it should be iron core ballast needs a starter while eballast doesn't need one. you can run fl tube (or certain fl tube such as t- using eballast.

Cool!! Got the idea finally..... ok so i got some norm 36W lights, but it will do for me cos i dun really see how much diff it would be to ME to convert to e-ballast if i can put up wif the fact tt my lights might give out more heat than a e-ballast one and can put up wif the flickering start-up[] ... big thanks to all

PL lights do need starters, those wif 4 pins need starters, those wif 2 pins only need ballast, starter is built-in.

And with eballast, it consumes about 30% less energy.

Yes Zac08, my PL tubes with e ballast are using starters, so PLs with 4-pins do require starters when used with e ballast.

Wait a minute here... Confused now...[] I have a 4 pin 36W PL tube connected to a E-ballast, and I dun see any starters anywhere. Can someone clear this up for me.... And my smaller lights which are using normal ballast are only 2 pin ones, so I dun see starters there too....

    Anyone care to help??

Aiyoh... so many views until every one is confused...[]

    Let me figure.

E-ballast: no starter needed for both FL and 4-pin PL
Iron core ballast: starter needed for both FL and 4-pin PL
2-pin PL: build in starter... no need starter for any kind of ballast.

    OK?

Errr.. 2pin Pl cannot connect to normal 4 hole ballast.

Just to be more precise, the 4 pin PL lights are actually PLL according to industry. and the 2 pins I think are called PLC (I think). Maybe we should start calling our PL lights PLL... to be more exact... when calling distributor shops they often have no idea what I mean until I say PLL or until I say its a 4 pin....
