imo deterrence is due to hassle rather amount
if one can make it hassle free, i don't think anyone will mind paying the small amount

I think the fees will result in less submissions.

For example, if the purpose of the fees is just to buy prize, then most of those who are not that 'pro' will not submit, because they know they are not going to win and lose $5. And those submitting will only want to win, instead of sharing.

Anyway, it's just going to be an online submission I assume. Keep prizes to minimal, or can get some sponsors etc.

We can have a special category, with tank of the month. The winner will be feature there, with photos etc. And also he can do a write up to share more on his methods, the challenges etc. And someone can help do his interview etc.

    Just my thoughts.

    Cheers, Christophe

If it is for promoting Aquascaping, I am fine without any prizes at all. After all, the honor of getting the title of " Tank of the Month" is a good enough prize for motivation.
We scape our tanks to express ourselves and our ideas and not to win prizes right?

I think Nano(1-2ft tank would be good) tank is more suitable for "tank of the month" like MAC forum they organise. Can change any time and get everybody going, is cheaper for everyone to join the fun. Big tank takes more than a month to show its potential, big tank would be more ideal in 3-4mth.

I believe the concept of 'Tank Of The Month' should go by the voting method. The members in this forum will decide which setup is worth mentioning for the TOTM through voting. The theme/no theme idea is not necessary in my personal opinion as the forum members control the votes to choose who they think has the best setup irregardless of type of setup. All members should post their setup in the aquascaping section as per normal but for new tank setup, the owner are encourage to post more pictures of how the tank started from the bare tank coming into their home till the stage where the tank has matured. For members who has a matured setup, just post as per normal in the aquascaping section and wait till someone vote for your tank. Stuff such as the tank parameter and the equipment used for the setup should be mentioned in their thread. Nothing is needed to be submitted but posting of picture in the thread is highly encouraged.

As for the fear of multi-nicking in this forum, I should say that the owner of these multi-nicking should be banned from this forum. I do not see a need for multi-nicking in a forum and my only thought to this multi-nicking exercise is that the owner of these multi-nick has some ulterior moves, that's why the recommendation to ban them permanently. We are here to learn and enjoy this hobby through sharing of information and knowledge and do not need to be 'cheated' by others who has ulterior motive.

    Hi everybody,

As I see MAC being commented about over here, let me explain a little on how we got the TOTM going and some of the 'created and borrowed' concepts. Being MAC-we're mostly about Aquascaping. There's with/without plants aquascaping but generally it's with some plants.

We understood that not everybody would have planted tanks, some would have only fish tanks. In our over 'cleverness', we made themes to cover everybody's taste.
We have found some themes to be few in entries-especially the fish ones. We reasoned that many are intimidated by the aspect of photography. Should be less problem here I believe.

We felt the need to separate the sizes of the tanks and styles because after all, we wouldn't want the same tank winning in multi categories! It would also give a chance for the same styles to get head to head voting.
[that said, it's possible to bar any winners for 3 months from participating in the rules]

As for nicknames-MAC is strict about signature with real name and although on the surface it looks only like a deterrent but it's also about getting to know a person and sharing. I'm definitely more comfortable sharing with for example: somebody called 'VK Lim'[eg] than a 'D-lishious'.

Prizes are from our kind sponsor and this encourages participation and gatherings to celebrate and to know the person behind the nickname . It also brings out some 'Silent' 'terror' scapers to come out and share.

We're making it up as we go along. So far it's pretty good with Govt incentives for competitions etc but that's another topic.
