gravel plate??
normally used for undergravel filtration... used to use it in my small tank for undergravel filtration..
I dont know how you guys call it.. "sand plate"?
it is like a plastic which the substrate is put on top of it, leaving an empty area at the bottom... probably for water circulation..

It's a outdated piece of technology. It's so much better and easier to use even a internal filter.
I think a external filter will do. Do not know wahts the effects on the gravel plate on the roots growth of the plants though.
