saw some at seaview today
I didnt see them at C328... or at least the ones I saw didnt look anything like those at kenko...
Note that Kenko uses 2 types of fishes, one being the tiliapia lookalike "chin chin" and the other being the garra rufa... The one I am looking for is garra rufa...
Seems like I have no choice but to try make a trip down to seaview...

Hi,
I can't help but join this forum to correct some misconceptions of Garra Rufas when i came across this forum while researching on garra rufa.
I am a keep and breed Garra rufas and have strong interest in this fish as i have a skin problem.
Only Qian Hu is selling the REAL GARRA RUFA. I have been to a number of shops in SG, and they are all selling hybrid spa fish, namely the chin chin and garra ceylonensis.
Hybirds are priced at about $2/pc
Real GARRA RUFAS are about $10 to $20/pc
Really no point in getting the fakes, they might be hurtful and may cos bad skin damage, and they do not match up to the real thing.
Hope this helps.
@ dennypoon,
Are the real ones from Turkey and able to tolerate high temperatures?
I did come across some information and thought they would be great for my balcony tank.
It gets really warm during the dry season.
I record temperatures of 37C and had whole tank wipe outs...![]()

The real garra rufas are commonly available in Turkey and Germany. But it is protected in turkey and therefore exports are disallowed from turkey. Other places which readily have stock is SG and Malaysia. ** There are alot of fakes, alot.
Yes they are able to tolerate temp of up to 43 degrees, although i do not reccomend that temp. They work best at 35 to 37 degrees at spa or pools, this temp will stimulate them to work and be effective as spa fishes. But normal temp for survival of this fishes is btw 15 to 35 as they leave in a sub tropical climate. Ph should be at 7.
Sorry celticfish, don quite get the last part. Whole tank of other fishes wiped out or whole tank of garra rufas wiped out?
It was "regular" fish like ABNs, tetras and some Otos...
The tank was setup sometime November and all was going great.
That was until the hot season visited us sometime March/April.
All the fauna died...
I didn't realize it at all till the weekend.
After reading about the Garra rufas I think they will suit that tank.
Plus I won't require them to nibble at peoples legs!
I suppose I will need to make my way to QH sometime.
I heard at one time they weren't selling the real ones but that has changed i guess.
Thanks for the confirmation too!

Oh i see.
They will naturally nibble on dead skin, especially the little ones. You are in no way mistreating them if you use them as a spa fish, as long as you feed them regularly.
They are hardy fish that are easy to keep, just bear in mind they need plenty of oxygen.
Good luck, hope i was of some help.
Hi Bro Denny... What kind of setup do you use for your home spa? I don't suppose regular fish tanks are suitable given that you will want to put your foot or hand in there for extended periods of time?

Hi bro,
Yes i do use a fish tank. It is 2 feet by 2 feet by 2 feet. With 2 air pumps and a filter with UV light to kill bacteria. My tank includes large pebbles at the bottom. I place my tank on the floor. I need mine for use up to my knee, cos my affected portion is between my ankle and my knee, hence my 2 feet tall tank.
I personally feel a tank setup is fine. What do you have in mind for yours? Do you have any concerns regarding using a conventional fish tank?
