My experience with the pearl gourami was not good. One of them (probably a male) is terrorizing all the other incumbents in the community. Though I think such behavior will differ from fish to fish.
The biggest difference between Male and Female should be the intensity of the color. A breeding male will be very intensely colored where the area under the head and pectoral fins will be in deep red/orange.
Another less proven way to differentiate is the dorsal fin, males are supposed to have a longer and pointed dorsal comparatively to the female.
