    From Practical Fishkeeping:

Animal welfare groups are deploring the sale of live goldfish keyrings being sold as unofficial Olympic souvenirs in the Chinese port city of Qingdao, describing the sales of such merchandise as "shocking".

Traders along the waterfront in Qingdao, where the Olympics sailing events are slated to take place this summer, are selling the novelty keyrings (or keychains).

A live goldfish is sealed inside a heart-shaped plastic bag on which one of five mascots for the 2008 Olympic Games is printed on one side.

The goldfish do not have any room to swim and a very limited supply of oxygen in the sealed bag, dooming them to certain death.

According to a spokesman for the RSPCA, "The fish would have little oxygen available and it would be impossible to feed the fish."

"The fish would survive just a few hours, and would be lucky to make it from the manufacturers to the point of sale."

"This product shows a shocking lack of respect for a living thing and should be withdrawn from sale."

"We are shocked and appalled. It is a gimmick and shows no respect for the animals at all."

"We can't understand why anyone would want to buy such a thing."

The RSPCA has said that it would appeal to the Chinese authorities to crack down on the sales of the keyrings.

The Chinese, "Lumber 1" in coming up with such shit. They deserve a gold medal.

This is as bad as the 'goldfish shoes' they had in the 80s. Why not put goldfish into the olympic medals then? This is a despicable get-rich-quick attitude.

hmmm may be they are using the pouch as a carrier for the gold fish so you could transport it back home, instead of the conventional fish plastic bag ..

    ha ha however, highly unlikely...
where do they even get the key chains + pouches? someone had to issue them in the first place.
    ONLY Blue Zebras.

the authority should catch those idiots and trap them in a plastic ball with limited air inside and let them stay inside till they are gasping....

let them have a taste of their own medicine....

    Not defending them but...
There is a small hole on the top left.
It could be in a breathebel plastic bag.
Though there seems to be no way to feed and keep water quality good.

don't think that is a air hole. if its a air hole how come even the top part which is air is so puff up??

not sure if it's a breathable bag but it looks like the key chain is made of same material as those float.

    just my 2 cents

Actually I'm not sure if this is true or a hoax. It sounds awfully like those bonsai kitten hoaxes on the net.

    it's real.

I took this pic in early Feb this year..

    "Lucky Little Magical Fish"....

its little but not lucky nor magical...

anyway, this golden fish chain is definitely unauthorised product.

and the Chinese law doesn't punish animal abuser, like there where a group of ppl took videos of woman crush little animals like kitten, turtles with her high heels...it was reported on many different media and we all pissed off, but the law cannot do anything about them.

remember it's still a developing country.

This is terrible, but this is no different than our fish having 4d numbers tattooed on them.

China needs a compassionate religion. It's amazing how a few decades of communism can wipe out 4 thousand years of cultivated virtue.
