Problem description:
Actually not a very big problem, it is just that I noticed some hairy stuff growing of the leaves of my plants, I presume they are hair algea. It looks fine and plants are growing well from a distance but when observed in close distance these hairy stuff is clearly seen. I have change the lighting period, type of ferts and dousing quantity in the database above. I know some amount of algea is inevitable but I seeking preemptive actions before a outbreaks occurs. Any ideas guys?

YAmato shrimps

How much shrimps for this size tanks?
I cannot understand the intention of dosing Nitrates and phosphate in the tank. I can see all those fish waste around the tank and these should be a reasonable good source of nitrates and phosphates in the tank already.
Also is my fert regime with Lushgrow enough?

If I just rely on LushGrow Aqua and Micro for my K source, how much should I dose?

I am using 10 yamatos in my 3ft tank.
I am dosing with Lushgro aqua (2ml/3 times weekly),micro (1 drop/weekly) and KH2PO4 (1ml/3 times weekly) as well. However I had just started my planted tank and trying out if the regime will suit my tank. So I cannot say my regime is the best. Besides I am doing an interval photo period to rid the algae, so might not be the best conditions to allow plants growth
So far my HG and HC are definitely growing and my yamatos plus SAE definitely doing a good job removing all the algae

Alechim, just to let you know I just got myself 4 Yamatos but have not put them into the tank yet but will go get more. My fert regime is similar to yours expect I dose more than what you put in. Lush Grow (10ml/2 times weekly), micro ( 1 drop/2 times weekly) and KH2PO4 ( 10ml/2 times a week from a stock of 1 teaspoon in 500ml water). Not sure if it is too much cause just started last fri. Anyone else have other opinions?

Does Seachem Excel work against hair algae as well?
Dose direct into the water or do the same as BBS, inject the dosage close to the affected areas?

So far for the past 2 weeks, I had dosed excel regularly. Does not seems to kill the algae though.

Did you dose double the dose? Seriously, I propose draining away the water then shoot excel on the affected hair algae or BBA. I tried and it effectively kills my green hair algae in 1 day..![]()

draining away the water means all the water?

Hi
Sorry, I mean drain away the water so that you can excess the leaves. I dont know how much water you have to drain. If you can do this, then cut away affected leaves.

That what I did gut away the affected leaves. The good thing is most of my plant are fast growers so they grow back in not time. My yamatos just hide somewhere in my tank and I don't see them at all in action. put in 10 now not sure how many in there. Any one knows why?

my HC are the affect ones,. It is either i remove the whole bunch and replant some new ones or have patiences loh.

Lush Grow at 10ml/2 times weekly will abt 4ppm of Nitrate, 3ppm of K, 10ml/2 times of KH2PO4 will give you 1ppm of 0.1ppm of Phosphate. This is definitely not too much but a bit on the low side. However, I realized that you did 17% WC weekly, if you want to use the EI method, you need to perform close to 50% WC weekly.

Hi
Share with you my 4ft planted tank had a nasty encountered of super blooming hairy alages.
You see reason why i got so much hairy alage and many kinds of alage, i got a powerful lighting system T5 7x 59w( light up for at least 7hrs aday) and i managed to reduce and contain any alage attack by adding 10ml of any Liquid fertilisers (ADAs, Excel,Seachem Flourish and so on) 1x in 2weeks , 30-40% WC weekly,10 really big big yamatos, 100 malaya shrimps(now 50% reduced has become my killies' dinner), 500g of peat media( an effective alage reducer) for my 1700l/min filter cansiter, monthly cleaning up filter cansiter and 1 big SAE from bro thirteen will do the clear every alage within 1-2 weeks!
Hope this will help you

once you get the right balance of fert and your plants uptake, the algae will be controlled.

I agree that once you get the balance of fert and plants uptake, algea will be under control. But some algea will still be present. Well it indicates the health of the tank. but if you guys have been to the basement of Tampines mall, there is this LFS (Aquastik I think). There is this display tank with a few torpedoes and angel fish. Look closely you will notice no algea at all. Wonder how the boss did it.
