    Problems with my Grouper.......

I recently put a Grouper with my lionfish, hoping them to live happily together. I put malayan, ghost shrimps and mollies in to let them feed on. But next day, when i came back frm sch, I saw the lionfish dead with the head bruised, almost all of the feeder fish are gone and the grouper is scraping algae off the LR.

Does a Grouper eat that much?
Will a grouper attack Cleaner Wrasses?
What other food should i give my grouper?
Why does it always hide in the LR?

Does a Grouper eat that much?
groupers are opportunistic feeders, which means that they will eat whenever they can.. try not too feed so much.. cut down on it..
Will a grouper attack Cleaner Wrasses?
usually, will not, unless it is very hungry.. but it is safe for u to feed the grouper once a day.
What other food should i give my grouper?
i recommend having shrimp meat from NTUC, sotong sliverfishes etc.. these are from the sea, have the natural proteins for the fish.. rather than feeding them FW feeders.. which they do not contain the proteins required..
Why does it always hide in the LR?
this is their behaviour, like i mentioned eariler, they are opportunistic feeders, i.e, they ambush prey rather than chasing them ard earnestly.. and they are cave or cervices dwellers.

This just proves that you should of done some REASEARCH on the fish first. Now you have a dead Lion Fish, thanks to the grouper most probably.
I would also like to know what kind of grouper it is. Most grow over 1 feet long.

Why does the grouper eat that much - because they get big, and need lots of food. Simple RESEARCH would of told you that.

Would it eat a cleaner wrasse - depends on how the grouper feels, but generally cleaner wrasse have a VERY poor survival rate in captivity.

What other food should you give your grouper: What size tank have you got, and what type of grouper is it?

Why does it hide in the LR - because they do that. Again, research would of told you that.

Good luck, i think you'll need it.[]

The Red Coral Grouper? Aka the Miniatus Grouper?

    Like that one?
Well, seeing as though they get around 16 inches long, up to 20" long in the wild, i reccomend you take the Grouper back to the store you got it from, or give it to a friend..

james, usually, the lion is fine with grouper.. chances are, the lion could be too small and looks like a potential meal for the grouper.

    kelvin..
From what i've heard from other Grouper keepers, they are very aggressive, and are "a predatory bulldozer"..
Lionfish are generally very peacefull, but predatory (as you know).
I still say that some simple research would of prevent this...nobody would of advised a fish that can reach 16"+ to go in a 2ft tank.

hahaha.. james, that fish is not gonna to reach 16"... so dun worry abt it outgrowing 2ft.. reason, once it reaches abt 10".. it is time to eat it already.. hahaha.. that is what i told lyon.. hahaha....and i think he is planning to do the same.. hahaha

akoh, a grouper at 4 metres?.. that is scary... i want to get out of its way if i see it.. dun want to become its meal..hahaha..

sky D- i think the coral trout u got should be abt 3" right?

2ft will be ok for the next 12-15mths but filtration got to be good cause they messy eaters.
    - will eat anything that can fit into its mouth. so cleaner in danger soon.
as the guys said- that's the behaviour> in natural surroundings they tend to hide among staghorn corals & its very hard to spot due to its colouration.(same as comet shrimps)
    seen them on dives-
but in time will recognise u & be out in the open when it gets too big to squeeze into rocks.
Ghost shrimps are as close as u can get to SW live shrimps- so that's ok but the rest are not good for health.Fed solely on FW feeder fishes will cause too much fatty tissues to build up around the liver increasing the risk of liver failure.
As kelvin said, stick to sotong/prawns/silverfishes & mussels(squeeze the mussel at the surface for the juices & the grouper will come out)
growth is something like 1" in 3-4mths. but if fed twice a day u can look for more.

    had a rock grouper i caught at 4" in a 2ft for 8-9mths.
it was yrs ago & i can't remember if i released it......or fed it to my triggers then.

Well..i think buying a fish and planning on eating it lacks responsability, though i'm sure they are very tasty!
Akoh - are you sure you dun mean the Potatoe Cod? They are one of the largest groupers and can change colours in seconds..

hahaha.. james, i guess it boils down to how u look at the fish...whether u see it as food or pets. it is like those hatchery where they raise the fries and sell it later as seafood..but u can buy them to keep as pets.. up to individuals.. hehehe.. to me irresponsibility is when u buy them and do not take care of them when the novelty wears off.
anyway, if i'm not wrong, most groupers can chance their colors to match their surroundings.

James, the one in Oz is the Potato Cod but I'm not too sure about the one in Palau, the locals said it's a common Rock Grouper ! [:0]
