    blackwater will become clear again.

trace elements. some heavy metals will get adsorbed.

    Hi Loupgarou,

"blackwater will become clear again. trace elements. some heavy metals will get adsorbed.", looks like back to square one, actually it's the trace elements that I need .[]

why are you adding charcoal if you want trace elements?

the dark color is from black water extracts? or from tannin leeching from your wood? Either way, wouldn't a water change be more effective?

Charcoal removed trace elements? didnt know that... will remove the charcoal inserts from my filter then. looks like my daily/weekly dosage of dennerle's product is just wasted on the charcoal huh?

Charcoal, or rather carbon will absorb various nutrients... but up to a limited capacity... sort of like a dry sponge... once its fully soaked, it won't absorb anything.

Isn't carbon know to leach the icky stuff they absorbed back into the water after sometime?

In any case, better not to have carbon in a planted tank.
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:
A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.

carbon/zeolite must be changed regularly, zeolite cannot be used in saltwater .

both are used in bare tanks to absorb ammonia and medication, and other toxins.

in planted tanks, they absorb trace elements needed and your fert becomes useless.

    carbon adsorbs organic carbon, mostly
    zeolite absorbs ammonia
they don't do the same thing
as for trace elements being adsorbed by carbon
nobody has done conclusive tests, so i dunno
but it clears up blackwater for sure

    On the effect on KH/PH...

Some carbon leech PO4 into the water. If the PO4 level is very high, it will act as a PH buffer. Your KH reading will not be accurate because other than CO3, it is also registering the buffering by PO4...

that link on the krib is informative, but doesn't describe the behaviour of non-chelated trace elements
that's why i can't say for sure what'll happen if the metal isn't chelated

bc, why does carbon leach phosphate? you're talking about fresh or when the carbon is saturated?
