These are one of the commonly available fishes in the LFS, can sometimes be found even in the smaller neighbourhood LFS.

It's hard to say. The best practice when keeping tiger barbs is to keep them in a group of 6 or more. If you keep less, then they may easily turn their attention ("aggression") on other fishes. Since you have 45 of them, then it would seem to be workable, theoretically.

However, as some aquarists have found out, it may not be necessarily so, as newly introduced fishes are being bullied and harassed constantly.

I can only hypothesise that the tiger barbs, being existing occupants, may have already marked out their own territories in the tank. Therefore, any newly introduced fishes would be seen as encroaching upon their territories and is intolerable. If it was the other way around, where tiger barbs are introduced as new occupants instead, then there could be a higher chance of keeping the fishes together.

Unfortunately, these are just my conjecture, so a lot depends on the characters of your tiger barbs.

    thanks.

I introduced larger fish into the tank yesterday (java barbs), and they were being harrassed for a couple of hours. As of this morning, they have stablized and are getting along.

therefore, the only unknown factors here is whether they got along because of the differences in size, or if it is just a matter of time.
