i am no guru but have experienced similiar situation before... it could be due to my high temperature then...

after increasing the height of my lights... my temperature was much lower and there were no more fishes jumping out...

    what's your temperature?

For your info my 2ft planted tank temperature is about 27-29.. What type of filter are you using? Do you know that you cannot keep washing your filter as you need time for the bacteria colony to establish itself...takes about 2-3 months..(When you need to clean your filter always using tank water and not tap water>>>chlorine or chloramine can kill all your good bacteria). If your fish keeps dying it might be worthwhile to invest in test kits like NH4, NO2 and NO3 (pH and KH is only needed if you inject CO2)

Err..... fish can jump for various reasons lor....

... sometimes they get scared e.g. if you suddenly turn on the tank lights, or if you suddenly plunge your hand into the water.... Moral of the story is don't scare your fish.

... sometimes it's their nature to jump, like shrimps are well-known for committing suicide. Yesterday budak caught a shrimp doing its tango dance near the toilet. As soon as the shrimp saw budak, it danced to the other side. So tank covers are necessary.

... sometimes they "cannot take it" so they jump lor... living conditions so bad they'd rather die... I mean bad living conditions stressing the fish out lah. Like too hot, too cold, water too foul, water not suitable etc. Moral of the story is to keep water condition suitable for the fish, and if that's not possible, get the right fish for your water condition.

... sometimes.... I dunno why else already lah. Why not you ask the fish?

hmmm wats the best way to cover a tank without interfering with the light intensity going into the tank?? cause if use glass or plastic.. over time water will condense on the glass and then block the light???
i wish to cover my tank but worrried abt these problems..
    sorry for borrowing this thread..

I guess the fish that jumped were startled when lights were suddenly switch on or someone knocked on the glass. They may happen to be at the edge of the tank at that time and easily jump out of the tank.

How about putting a 2" strip of acrylic along the perimeter of the tank to prevent this?

juggler, i was thinking of DIY some form of perimeter too but acrylic is abit hard to be easily manipulated right? where can i get them in raw form? any other ways to build one?

Can try using air-con trunking strips as they are easier to cut. I guess they don't block out too much light since you are going to put them at the top. I can pass you some. But won't look aesthetic though.

I'm afraid that inque can't add cover to his tank as he use house fan to cool his tank temp. The only way is not to watch Titanic in your room(so your fish will not follow)..[]

Do you use bacteria additives e.g. Cycle from Nutrafin. These help to lower the ammonia ans nitrate levels thus making it a better place to live in. Also do you have bigger fishes inside this tank?? For e.g. a discus or cichlid which has been bothering other tank mates?? This may be another factor to force the fishes to jump out.

And sometimes, they just jump out because they are scared ****less, by anything... Have personally lost a discus, bettas, emperor tetra and shrimps..... All due to suicidal tendencies from tank jumping. [] []

You can buy acrylic sheets from the art shops in Bras Besar Complex. Try Art Friend at the 3rd or 4th floor. As for cutting to strips, I have the cutter and can help you but you need to give me a few days notice to find it.

Fish jump for many reasons but foremost amongst them, is to escape a predator. You didn't say what are the other fish in your tank but it could be possible that your "Bo Chup" regime in maintaining the tanks would also mean that you are not feeding the fish enough. Some of your bigger fishes may be so starved of food they are resorting to eating their tank mates.

Unsettled fish also always jump. Besides that, I have discovered that almost all fish will jump if you fill the water in your tank to the brim.

    Inque,

Post your new question in a new thread. You'll get more help as some ppl may have stopped reading this thread already, plus it'll make things neater and easier to search next time.

If there are no predators, then check your water conditions. I know the lazy feeling, but if you don't investigate the problem then no one can help you. No one can solve the problem if they don't know the cause.

You can keep changing water, but if there is something in your tank messing with the conditions, it won't help. For a start, check temperature, pH and NO3.

What filter are you using? When was the last time you cleaned it? Is the flow of your filter much more reduced then it was clean?

How big is your tank? Are your fishes still committing suicide?
