hrm no reason at all. i'm just wondering whether there is a need to? for instance, carbon you change after a certain time frame when it reaches is maximum adsorption etc. so i assume from your rhetorical question we don't actually have to have them changed? just clean them when they gets too dirty?
Personally i will change them slowly part by part over a few years. There is no hard & fast rule on the change of filter media. I believe over time, wools can be worn out, ceramic rings crack, substrate breaks down. So by taking out a section of it to replace for new ones will not cause a major algae break out.
There might be no intention for a change of filter media but certainly a consideration to upgrade the media. There are lots of reputable brands of media to choose from. So it really depends on what you really need.

For me personally, I will change the ceramic ring when they turn dark. My thinking is that the minute pore has clogged by something that I couldn't physically see from my naked eye but is noticeable by the difference between a well used ceramic ring and new ones. But this will occur after prolong use for a few years. If a study could be organized as to why the ceramic ring changes colour, we might knew what is actually happening and know whether is it necessary to change the ceramic ring or keep using them. The efficiency between new ceramic ring and well used ones should be also made known to hobbyist like us. Just a thought.![]()

i currently using ehiem substrate pro. i was using ceramic rings and from research and recommendations eheim substrate pro seems like a popular choice. alright thanks for your replies!
I using my ehiem substrate pro for more then 3 years, so far so good.![]()
Eheim came up with a new media. It's squarish in shape and biege in colour. But somehow, it's cheaper than the substrate pro...hmm...
Been using the eheim pro media for more than 3 years. so far so good.
Hello,
I think Eheim media lasts a real long long time. I have been using Eheim Pro media for 3 years without any problem and know a few friends who swear by the media for about 10 years.

Always a Newbie
It's biological filter media that does not need to be changed. Another brand of filter media that people swear by is Biohome. In fact the opposite is true, one the bacteria is cultivated it becomes more effcient.
