hi bros, my current 3ft 4 layer ohf, i put 1st layer wool, 2nd layer is normal Ceramic Rings (those $5 per packet), 3rd layer is those normal dymax bacteria housing, 4th layer is just plain coral chips.. will be getting another cannister filter to add on.what medias have i left out and should be in put inside the cannister filter? tank is a 322 with 20 pieces of kkp mix with bp. thinking of biohome/biohome plus, eheim substrate pro but the problem is i don't know their main purpose.. can anyone give me some guides? if i can't afford the above mention, what other medias is ok?

IMHO, if you have large space in your filter, then any media will do, beneficial bacteria is able to colonize any type of media. Those expensive one was made somehow that there are lots of cavity/tunnel inside the media, in other word more surface area. This type of media good is you have limited filter space and high bio load

Biohome Plus is supposed to contain nutrients to encourage BB growth. Biohome itself is just a filter media that reputedly has the largest surface area available for bacterial colonization.

    Hi blk115,

Kindly use proper spelling in your post.
May I know what is kkp and bp?

If they're what I think they are, then running both OHF and cannister filter, even if filled with biohome will still be pushing it slightly as they reach adult size. You will have to make sure you do frequent water changes.

Knowing that they shit alot, you have to focus on mechnical filtration as well.

Use your OHF for mechnical filtration and add on canister for bio filteration, use better media like biohome for your canister filter as it got limited space.

Friend, i think we must first understand the basis of filter media. There are two types of media.

    1) Mechanical
    2) Biological

If we're interested in just keeping fish a larger amount of mechanical filter media will be necessary. This includes various brands & types of filter media. There are top of the range to very affordable ones.

How do we determine how much to spend on filter media depends on how much we value our fishes. There are people here in AQ where their filter media is as expensive as the fish or even more expensive. It's relative on how much you plan to spend.

A little biological filter media will not do any harm.

There are people with 2 or more filters running in series for one tank. What you're actually doing is providing more filtration to the tank which is particularly good. Since you know the cause(high bioload) the effect will be to step up filtration by a node.

I'll say biohome is a great brand available locally that gives the largest surface area. There are some which hasn't reach our shores.

There is no hard & fast rule on filter medias. The basic concept is how much can you provide.

I'll trust reputable brands as their creditability isn't of my concern. I do not wish to pay lesser & worry if it works.

    Cheers!

ok.. judging from that, i will just use my cannister and dump all the biohomes i got inside.. the OHF will consist of wool, ceramics rings, bacteria house and abit of coral chips.. should be more than sufficient

Monitor the progress & alter as and when is needed. E.g. Changing of media or adding different media.

    Update us.
