Protien Skimmer

Need some clarification on the usage of protien skimmer.

I understand that protien skimmer (with air stone) is used in marine tank to remove dissolved waste (Protien?) and this type of protien skimmer is not suitable for fresh water tank use.

In the market there is another type of protien skimmer which make used of a pump to force bubble in the protien skimmer and it is stated in the box suitable for both marine and fresh water used.

Has anyone try this before? What is the result? I'm think of getting one for my FGT with koi.
