I have just brought a BB solution from Petmart, do a nearly 100% water change , clean up my canister today 4.10.2008, add the BB solution for the tank to do a full cycle , wait for few days and see will it make any difference for the cloudy water for the past few weeks.

Usually it take how long for the tank to be cycle after I added in the BB solution? Petmart told me is around 2 days and ask to added in 60ml for a 4ft tank, is it enough?

2 days seem to be quite fast. even for a filter with media from a healthy tank. More like a week maybe? Various BB solutions have various concentrations of BB, some come in powder and some come in liquid form. Check the bottle to see the recommended level of solution you should add per day.

it took me almost a week after I added in the BB solution from Sera. Patience is the key here.

IMHO, I'm not too convince of bottled bb. The duration I spent on using a bottled bb to 'accelerate' the process and not using them are almost the same.... at least to the naked eye, i.e. no cloudiness & no adverse reaction from the residence of the tank.

I've read for stable tanks, the recommended bioload is 1 inch of fish for every 1 gallon of water.

However, Smeagol to balance the comparatively high fish load, you could do with a denser plant growth.

Is your water treated bro? If not, each wc you're doing is actually killing bb... back to square one.

I guess and suspect my water is not treated yet..sighz..but if no water change, it look so cloudy and it will make my discus feel so stress. I believed and suspect it the canister filter not cycle yet, last time when I use internal filter for my 2ft, it look alright and water is clear although my fish do poo often. Maybe of the overload of the bio too. Now iam having 10 discus, 10 tiger blak, 4 tatra...

Hrmm hmmm sticky situation i see... no wonder you keep doing water change. Since as you said from the other thread that you dont have a holding tank for your fishes.

    Do you use anti-chlorine?

You can either Risk the cloudy water and be patient so as to allow the BB to establish itself.

    or

is it possible to cycle your filter in another smaller tank? or maybe even a large pail? then you do manual water change for your 4ft during the time that the BB is establishing itself? Then once it has been running for about 2 weeks you put it back into your main tank (Dechlorinated water already in the main tank). So then you will have an established filter instead of a 'new' one.

if you have more time on your hands maybe you can add plants to help the breaking down of waste?

    Cheers

In order to cycle my tanks faster, I plug in my new canister to run parallel with another in my established tank, after a few days I will then plug it back into the new tank to further populate the BB...

Quite a headache position you're in bro...

Any plant would help in absorbing the waste. Well, since there are fauna in your tank and there aren't any substrate... you may consider putting floating plants instead. It does the job too.

    bacteria boom

hi people, since this thread talks about cloudy water and bacteria boom.. I was wondering if it was possible to have a bacteria boom in a tank containing just water and Gex soil.. No plants and organisms yet..
