alright.. if i were to go for 2.5ft in height, and keep softies, i dun need such high wattage bulbs (250W)right.. can just go for 150w right with the height of just 20cm above water level?

another thing, if i were to get a frag from my friend, i just have to leave the frag high up in the reef and prob solve right?
    ----------------
I think that for softies, MH is a luxury.... do take note that with MHs, your chiller's gonna work overtime... mine did and its lots of overtime....
I do recommend 150Ws if you are keen on LPS....
Saw a display setup with 150W MHs... the LPS looks great...

Theory wise, placing frags near the surface does solve some lighting issues...do take note that lighting intensity drops tremendously evry inches lower into your reef.....

and again if the frag mentioned is a SPS, then keeping it alive is not a problem, but whether it colours up is another issue....
Think you don wanna tank full of brown SPS... right???

    Hi all,

    - I have bought my MH (Ah Zoo) finally There are 2 MH inside. Well, I guessed it will be an excellent idea to have a chiller to go with it.

    - But, I have mentioned before that I DIY 6in 1 AC Fans b4 ? With the MH on, my water Temp hits Max. 27 degrees only So, I think a chiller is not really a must if MH is used.

    Cheers
    Marlin

phang, u know that i dun go for hardies.. [] thus i was thinking abt the wattage issue..

that is what i thought so too.. of course, if i were to get a frag of sps, i will definitely place it on top..afterall this is theory right... but dun know whether will it work

and again if the frag mentioned is a SPS, then keeping it alive is not a problem, but whether it colours up is another issue....

    kel ,

gpt pics of your tank ???

    can show or not ??

  7. #27
Sorry to hijack your thread, guys, but I need help. Kel, got a tank liao, 4' x 2' x 2.5' (height). Problem is the lighting, it's with 2 x 70W MH. Definitely not enough. Wondering how I can upgrade it to at least 250W MH - do I need to change the ballast too?

    Regards,
    Hong Yee

    Hi Hong Yee,

YOu will have to change the ballast....
and regarding the bulbs, what are you intending to get??

  9. #29
I really have no idea as to what to upgrade to .. everything is tentative now, cos my tank hasn't arrived! I will need to get people to help move the tank, which is impossible now, given tomorrow's public holiday. Are there any services that are up for hire or something when it comes to moving tanks?

    Regards,

yes.. u need to change the ballast... take this for analogy.. if u have 250 litres of water and u want to put them into a container that can store only 70 litres.. u think is it possible? yap.. change the ballast..[]

250w very ex, try 150w enuff liao. all corals i seen so far do very well under 150w. further more 250w is hotter n consumes alot of electricity.
250w mh without chiller is a definate no no.

but if u really insist, yes u need to change the ballast, ignitor n holder

Alamak, Kel, don't degrade my brain liddat leh. [] Joking lah, haahahahaha ... but I get what you mean, hehe. I will be putting off the lighting issue for a while, and use the 70W x 2 to "dong" a little while. The plumbing of my new tank is going to give me headaches for a long, long time man. Wanted to get it all done before school starts again next week, but it's starting to look a little too ambitious. Tank's coming this evening!!!! Yay!!!

No chiller yet, so Spiff, I'll just have to settle with 150s even later on. What I'm worried about is the loss of intensity, since the tank is deep (2.5' - arm barely reach the bottom, and I have monkey arms![] ) So probably it's back to the old lighting solution - maybe just place light-hungry corals higher up and softies down there.

    Regards,
    Hong Yee

    Hello!
I went to C328 and saw the "hanging" lights for only $250.
    I don't really know if it's a MH light, but it's 25o Watt.
They are using it for their plants too.
It's hanging above the plants on the floor.
Does anyone know if that is MH light?
    Thanks!

Wow, that's a cheap price! Has anyone tried these yet? What kind of MH bulbs do they use?

    Adman,

A lot of people use MV (Mercury Vapour) bulbs rather than MH because the bulbs and the control gear are both cheaper. However, most MV bulbs come in at the wrong colour temp. (too low) for a reef tank and may cost tremendous algae growth.

    Freddie,

Are you refering to whole pendents or jus the bulbs...

COs if you are looking for these pendents, many of the lighting stores at Balestier have them at rather affordable prices.... if bulbs, then you got to know what type (watts, whether they are SE or DE).....
