Hi bros,
I'm recently fascinated with smaller betta plakat (short tail half-moon). They are very colourful and are small in size which will fit nano tanks well. Am considering trying out maybe in 1 months time so would like to gather more info.
Just wondering if they can be kept peacefully in pairs (male & female) inside 1ft cube with other smaller fishes like boraras?
Are they difficult to keep? Will they take to non live food i.e. pellets, flakes, NLS, etc solely?
If betta plakats can't be kept in pairs and with small fishes in nano tanks, what other breed of betta will fit the small, colourful, peaceful, non live food and with small fishes?

I recommend you do not do so, they will fight and if it is mixed pair, you better get a second tank ready for the female to go to once the male has fertilised the eggs, they are extremely territorial. It is possible to keep them in a single tank, but you need to climatise them to stay in their own corner, this is quite tricky, but it can be done.
Does it applies to all betta type? I read that betta imbellis, rubra and albi can be kept in pairs without problem? But their price is out of range for me... any other betta will fit the nano tank i.e. small, colourful, peaceful in pair, non live food and in community with small fishes?

if you want them for a nano tank, B.rutilans or B.coccina(look at the bottom of this article for better pictures) might be a good choice. however rutilans is not sexually dimorphic, can't tell a male or female by just looking. Or if you want try getting a B.pugnax,which is larger than both coccina and rutilans. also, wild ones tend to jump as i was unfortunate to find out.

Hmm $4 is really cheap to get startedRutilans tends to be more agressive to tanks mates I read, so maybe coccina would be a better choice?
Thanks for the links, they are very useful. I have been randomly searching the web for more info on the fish and their care (need to read up more as betta is very new to me). Hopefully will find a suitable pair in 1 - 2 months time when I'm ready with my nano setup.

I was at C328 on 15 Aug afternoon. Indeed there was a small tank full of what looks like some dark wine red/black coloured coccina, below the snail tank near the counter.
Their size certainly very good for nano tank and very affordable for a beginner; but real challenge is not able to select a pair because seem like needle in the hay stack trying sex them...
easy to keep because short fins less prone to fin rot fin tear etc
but try not to put them with other fishes bad idea
Life is too short to be serious, laugh it up.
I kept 2 male and 2 female in a 2FT planted before. They need some space and hiding place.
Flare are one another at first but after they establish their pecking order things are peaceful. I can see eating together side by side during feeding time. But during non feeding time. The Afla male or female will just flare or give a short chase and the lower rank one just swim away (Sometime they dun even bother to chase).
I find that with my limited experience wild bettas are more tolerant of each other than the hybridised betta splendens which seems to go ballistic at each other. I remember there is a LFS specialising in betta splenden in Ubi area next to the Ubi car mart, you might ask them for their opinion, as they have kept bettas together in a tank.
