Hey, I was looking around the threads and I noticed there are many threads on CRS, I searched the internet to find pictures of CRS and I must say, they are beautiful! I want to start a 10 galon tank but I don't know much about how to care for them. Could you guys brief me on them and if I should get them first or an easier type of shrimp first.

    Thanks

CRS are relatively more sensitive than some other shrimps. Therefore one must exercise extra care in getting the water parameters acceptable for them. For example, CRS do better when the temperature of the water is cooler . In consideration of this , you might want to plan getting a chiller or a fan.
CRS is definitely not an easy shrimp to keep for a beginner. You might want to consider relatively hardier shrimp like cherry shrimp to start off first.
yeah and that beauty comes with a bigger price tag too

There's a CRS start up guide PDF at midori site, you can download from there.

I will suggest you start with bee shrimp, a lot cheaper and they are from the same family.

I will recommend C328. Their stock are quite constant compare to the rest and the price are reasonable too.

You can also check out the marketplace on this forum. Do a search on CRS. Sometimes some hobbyists sell for half the price that LFS sells. I have bought some from forumers. Very good quality too. Suggest that you go for the cheaper grades first - so that you don't get "burn".

Are you talking about Bee shrimp? I want to start off with them first too gat used with shrimp. Is there any special food that needs to be fed to them apart from the algae on the surface of the plants?

    Thanks

CRS = Crystal Red Shrimp - those which are white with red stripes. CRS is about $2.50 for B grades. $5-$7 for A grades. C grades maybe $2. [That is what I gather the general price which forumers sell.]

Cheaper will be the Cherry shrimps (no stripes, all red) which are about 40 cents each (from forumer). If you do a search on this forum for Cherry shrimps, you will see that some of the hobbyists have very nice cherry shrimps too. If you buy a whole bag of about 50 pcs from the LFS, it is usually cheaper about 50 cents each. And a whole bag sometimes have pregnant females. Once your tank is stabilised and your Cherry are sustaining, i.e. alive, then buy the Crystal Red Shrimps.

Some people just let the shrimps feed on algae in the tank. But new tank hard to have algae, right? I feed mine with the Hikari "Crab Cuisine" which are sinkable pellets. About $3.50-$4 a pack and can last for >1 year. Just a few pellets will do. About 2/3 times per week. Any uneaten pellets need to be removed within 24 hours so as not to cause water quality issue. See link for a picture of the shrimp food http://www.hikari.info/tropical/t_12.html. Put in some java moss, as it is supposed to be a "snack" for the hungry CRS.

For your info, my tank is really low cost. Initially just a internal pump (added one more waterfall, because I like it), a couple of java ferns, gravels. Do a search on brightsp@rky for some pictures of my tank and shrimps. http://www.aquaticquotient.com/forum...910#post349910 No frills. No test kits. I made sure that I cycled the tank with other a couple of fishes to ensure no death before removing the fishes and introducing the shrimps. Temperature at 24 degrees Celsius is ideal. Home hobbyists buy chiller to keep their tank cool. I have my tank in office, and office air-con is just nice at 24-25. If you getting a Chiller, ask the rest of the forumers for advice.

Hope you enjoy CRS shrimping, as much as I do. Can't wait for mine to breed. My first tank got wiped out due to fumigation. Now I have better grades CRS, I am waiting for them to breed. So are my friends, because they want to buy from me.
