i think not many people here use cable heaters, especially since Singapore is so hot already Tom Barr has also been very vocal about emphasizing that cable heaters serve no real purpose (he has an alternative theory that plant roots circulate oxygen more than cable heaters do).

Given that many people here are experiencing great results without them, you may want to consider starting up your tank without it

I used it before and did not experience any difference with and without it.

Same here, no difference, actually there are quite a few things that are not applicable so don't just go out there & start spending away.

    Cheers!

For clearer water get a UV or better filter system, that would help. Heater cable is waste of money.

If you decided to go for it... remember to feature it in a tank thread I've yet to lay my hands on it.

I'm have a substrate heater in my 5 ft setup. Not sure if it really do any good to the water circulation in the substrate. The convection current is suppose to help prevent the substrate from going anerobic.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

Growing lots of healthy plants in your tank will guarantee a clear water for sure .
