I tried to feed BBS only to by betta splendens fry for a week and a day now and some are having the symtoms of swim bladder disease and I had to cull them...My warning: Do not feed any fry solely on BBS as they can really cause Swim Bladder Disease...

i had the problem too...guess what i realised...do you leave the bbs you were going to feed in clear water for about 5 mins? that is to purge the excess salt in the salty bbs.

i believe the fries of mine which did survive were those who ate less.. they had less salt in their bodies..i concluded it when i saw that my fries that died were very shrivled.signs of water loss--salt poisoning.

    IMHO.

I just observed something...the ones that are dying and dead have BBS egg shells in them! I should be more careful in feeding the survivors...

BBS are not to blame...or is yet to be proven that they cause problems for fish fry.

I'm not sure about the swim bladder problem, have not experience that with my apisto fries. But i agree on the BBS egg shells or even the decap eggs (when not soak long enough till they soften) can kill fries. I lost a whole tank of 70+ A. elizabethae fries from using decap eggs.

after harvest bbs, always rinse a few times before feeding. unhatch eggs will choked fries.

decapp bbs eggs is best to soak for few minutes before feeding. remove un-eaten decapp eggs as and when, it will foul water easily.

in my humble opinion, i don't think that is the effect of bbs. i have been feeding my betta fries on bbs for the last 3 years, so far so good. nothing wrong at all. and i feed them on a sole bbs diet for the first 1.5month before changing them to tubi diet.

I don't think bbs causes that though....there may be some other factors like water conditions, stress, foreign introduced bateria...etc

haha the pro has spoken. glad to know that you are still in the betta field bro senjie. i too have not met with any problems with regards to feeding bbs to my apisto fries. so far so good, they were smart enough to ignore the egg shells, but do take extra precaution in rinsing the bbs and not harvesting the egg shells too!
