Mowing is the the answer, unclog your filter as well.
Look at it this way, a garden will have dead leaves, you as the gardener have to do maintenance. That's how it works. If you fail to provide the proper maintenance, you will see the result of 'lack of maintenance' like overgrown plants, GSA, BBA etc or worse dead fishes/shrimps.

Ok, i just have to ask this to clarify something to myself. Been reading an article somewhere (forget where sorry) and its confused me.

    N being Nitrogen yes?
    P being Potassium yes?
    K being what exactly?

Don't worry Peng Kang Hill, i suck at plant maintenance myself. Or just providing adequate conditions for them to thrive - i don't know

and thi is the most diffcult part for hairgrass. Imagine lawn of hairgrass and you have to cut dead leaves, hundred of them.

    Thanks everyone for your input.

Like I said earlier, my hairgrass seems to be beginning to show life with about 5% of them with new brightly coloured leaves, another 75% of them still green but not new leaves, leaving only 20% that is brown and covered with some BBA.

So, by mowing it ALL, doesn't it seem very wasteful? Actually, I am thinking of taking the easy way out by not doing anything except dosing it right, getting the plants stronger and letting the brown ugly leaves drop off on its own.

You guys think this method will work?

Hairgrass needles are extremely hardy even when brown and dead. You can try some surgery and only remove the brown, dead ones.

The don't rot so easily, takes quite a long time 2-3 weeks at least from yellow to brown.
