    hey bros,
I bought some cherry shrimps a few days ago, but they don't look like cherry shrimps that I see on the net. Here's a pic of mine:

it's got a white stripe on the back and white specs on the body and legs. It's a lot redder then the pics of cherry shrimps I see on the net aswell. Is it a cherry shrimp or do I have something else?

Its a beautiful cherry. Though some lfs brand them as sakura when they're more red...

    Yup I think its Sakura.
I suspect Sakura and cherry are from the same family.
According to the lfs, the distributor sieve out the redder ones and label them as Sakura so to sell at a higher price. Anyway it is hearsay, so correct me if I am wrong.

wow very red. you got a good deal! Think yours is definitely sakura.
normal cherries seldom get to that state of red.

Very nice red cherry but I think sakura have a better redness and without white spot.

One thing perculiar is that my all sakura/cherry red do not have the little white dots by the side (been looking the whole night at my little guys trying to spot these dots but failed..) so is corywinks' another sub-species?

In any case, the shrimp in the photograph sure looks nice!

Are you sure that's a cherry? I have never seen cherry with white stripe behind before. Looks strange to me.

so does that mean that it is neither a cherry nor sakura?

That is a cherry IMO. Just found out the white spot are normal for cherry too. There is this discussion about cherry and sakura, can check from here: http://www.aquaticquotient.com/forum...ad.php?t=44540

Bright red are still not the best colour I want to achieve, can check out bro spid's website for his superb sakura: http://sites.google.com/a/aquaspid.c...id/red-sakuras

well, my cherries are definitely not so red... maybe only one or 2 among the bunch.

and my sakuras, yes they are much redder than the cherries, and smaller in size too. my sakuras are all red during the day (nice colour), but realise that at night, half of them turn pale or almost colourless. do you all get the same with your sakuras? they switch off colour before going to sleep?

I guess light plays an important part, together with the color of the substrate and the food you feed the little critters.

Mine look great when under my 55w light and black river gravel

Colour fade after light off or at night are normal to shrimp, or fish, it protect them being spot by the predators IMO. Light have nothing to do with their colour, it's only for the plants and our viewing pleasure
