Hi, need some advice what fishes or medications are good to combat those "tiny snails"?

Got these snails from plants which i introduced to my tank.
I tried adding salt, but don't work.

My aquatic plants are moss & ferns. Fishes are oto & discus.

    Thank you,
    Kit.

add loaches or puffers for the easy way out. salt will not work unless it is in very high concentrations.

otherwise, manual removal! just spare 5 minutes everyday to dip your hands inside the aquarium :P should clear in 2-3 days unless there are alot of them. heh.

to prevent this in future, just soak your plants in a separate pail of water, add a couple tablespoons of salt, and give it a good mix. some snails might fall off from the plants due to the salinity irritating them. then inspect the leaves for eggs and snails.

    Hi bro,

think you are referring to those pond snails... You may manually remove them with tweezers (hands if you are more garang) from your tank for a few days... However, there may be still some unhatched snail eggs lying on the underside of some leaves here & there, so expect to still see some more snails appearing in a weeks' or so time when they hatch, then remove again...

Alternatively (not something that I'll do), you may add in a puffer to your tank to take care of this problem... [Snails are living things too, they have their rights to live in this world amongst us too... ]

    Hope this helps...

PS: Althought these snails do multiply at very remarkably fast rate, they are very hardworking creatures in cleaning up the surface of the tanks & algae also...

Every time I have a snail population bloom in my planted tank, my turtles in another tank will be very happy. Just pluck them out and feed them to the turtles.

After removing all the snails you can see, maybe you want to take out your plants and try to gently rub away the snail eggs?

I do try to keep one or two large ones to do cleaning up though.

do not apply medication as they might harm your fish as well. introducing loaches or puffer fish could end up in conflict with your other timid fishes. best go manual i.e. buy a tweezer see 1 kill 1.

just watch where u buy your plants from and wash them thoroughly before planting in your tank. good luck!

My problem is the red ramshorn snails which I spotted daily. Been killing them by plucking them form my plants and pressing them against my tank walls. Seems to be losing the war as they never seem to be exterminated...Tried looking for their eggs but in my heavily planted environment it's near to impossible.

You can try dropping in an Anentome Helena (Snail-eating Snail).

Slow and steady eater of snails, but they may start chewing on your shrimps (if you have any) if they manage to get their hands on them.

Haha thanks for the advice z z

Guess the sight of another type of snail even if it is a hunter-killer of ramshorns does not really goes down well with me

Think I will stick to the laborious way of plucking/killing them...

Time to rescape! Dump the soil and soak the plants in anti-snail solution for a while.

I too have snail problems in my 2ft shrimp tank. Have been using the manual removal method for past 1 months but never really see any reductions in its population.

My tank if full of Cherry Shrimps now so I dont think I can add puffer to remove the snails. I can still see many tiny snails at the moving around everywhere. There must be hunderds of them and still growing!

Is there any other ways to get rids of them without posing any threats to my cherries?

I guess a hard lesson learnt-better "sterilise" all items going into the tank, be it fish, shrimps, plants, driftwood, etc.

You never know what you going to get if you don't...

Sorry to all those snail lovers/breeders, I really must list snails as my main bugbear.

If you dip all your newly bought plants into a weak solution of Potassium Permanganate for 5 to 10 secs all the snails will die.

Just remember to wash your plants throughly in clean water after that BEFORE you put your plants in the tank.

Thanks all for the ideas. Will definitely be more wary next time before introducing anything into the tank.

Anyone out there has a solution to snails in tank situation? Manual removal is not getting me anywhere... need help... else may have to convert my shrimp tank into a snail tank soon

Get "Waterlife" Protozin(medication for treating ICK), make sure catch all your critters like shrimp out of the tank, they will die in no time. ...
