Since your question is 'Is chiller necessary", the answer is a NO since so many of us is having a planted tank without a chiller.
If you ask does chiller helps in a planted tank, I will say yes.![]()

My Apisto Keeping Diary
Apistogramma agassizii, Apistogramma bitaeniata "Careiro", Apistogramma brevis, Apistogramma elizabethae, Apistogramma eremnopyge, Apistogramma sp. "Miua", Dicrossus filamentosus
depends what plants you be keeping. Mine averaging 26-27'c in a/c room but only at nights.
the riccia are doing really well but not my flame moss...their tips are turning black. I don't have a chiller and I be considering switching to a more hardly moss with suits that temp range.
can any bro here advise?
Not necessary to have a chiller. I don't have one, because of (1) price, (2) pipings, (3) heat dissipated
But if you are living in a hot country like singapore, it is good to have one. Your plants will do better.
Cheers, Christophe
The need for a chiller depends on the type of flora and fauna you intend to keep.
yeah, it all depends on your floras but is not necessary for most of them. i purchased a 1/2 hp chiller for my 522 tank. but only turned it on for three hours in the past ten months. my wanter temp is around 29C-30C during daytime, but my plants are still doing very well....
Not necessary to have a chiller BUT a bonus if have.

Ok will turn w fan n do regular h2o topup
depend on your light too.
If MH, then it is a must
not really, I'm using MH with fan only. Water temperature maintained around 27-28. but probably because rainy season now![]()
Currently I'm using a fan to blow my tank and temperature is around 50+ degree. I think i would drop the idea of getting a chiller.

50+ degrees! Are you sure?? At 50 all your fauna and flora would die! 30 is bad enough....![]()

My tank is a 4-footer too and I switched on my 2 fans whenever my 4*54W light is on. After 1 month of monitoring, the temperature never dip below 29C.
As a chiller is an overhead to me, plants that I bought are limited to those that can stand high temperature![]()
