    Hi bro,
2 possibilities, algae is one and the other is your plant showing nutrient deficiency. Check this website out on nutrient deficiency signs, http://www.csd.net/~cgadd/aqua/art_plant_nutrient.htm

Based on what you describe, it does explain well the characteristic of brown algae. A photo would be good to tell. First check this website out on algae, http://www.aquatic-gardeners.org/cyprinid.html. It gives you a better depth of algae.

    Good luck bro.

I am also having the problem of brown algae. Will be putting in Siamesis to help.
