I heard that you cannot let your lotus 'learn' to reach to the surface for the available co2 if you want to keep them short/no aerial leaves. Once they learn to reach to the surface, they will keep growing long branches to reach to the surface.

I personally also like to keep mine short.

Do you only cut the leaves or the whole branch?

cut it off at the base of the leaf stalk. take the leaf, trace the stalk all the way to the base of it and pinch/cut it off.

so i'm assuming the leaves will eventually revert to it's green form unless kept under strong lighting. Anybody has pictures of the emersed leaves to share?
Okay are we discussing the Nymphaea Maculata (African tiger Lily)
http://www.aqua-fish.net/show.php?wh...r_lang=2&id=89 or the Red Lotus? Both look pretty much alike but are they different species/subspecies?

it is written as Nymphaea maculata (lowercase m). however I have to say that one shouldn't put too much store on a plant's exact taxonomic identity as these gardening plants comes in a huge variety of cultivars. it may not be possible to visually determine to the species level.
