Erm... I think most of us in the forum have been reasonably successful in keeping them past 6 months. It would be a disaster if not.

Sulawesi's maybe... but CRS definitely most have been past 6 months. Sustaining and breeding out so that the tanks remain populated through the generations would be more of a gauge to CRS keeping.

Been using magic soil for nearly 2 months, pH maintain at 6.2 - 6.4 with a bit of coral chips, so far so good, a few cherries carry eggs and can see some cherry shrimplets.
Have been using Nisso Custom Soil Shrimp for a while in my shrimp tank. PH around 6.4 . CRS, cherry, green shrimps all doing well.

Using Magic soil for my 2ft tank. Cleanest during setup, water cleared very fast. Even doing replanting, not much disturbance caused. No casualty for my cherry and wild cherry shrimps transfered from my old tank.

Just setup a new shrimp tank using Gex soil - red pack. Milkiness cleared after a day.

Anyone knows what's the difference between GEX green pack and red pack? Red says it's for shrimps, but can we use green pack for shrimps only tank?

Does GEX soil break down easily?

I am using the green pack for my CRS tank.

I believe the green pack is for use in tanks with non-rooted plants. The Red pack is for use on Rooted plants. The Red pack has more plant nutrients and would take longer to cycle.

Michael, you gave up rearing shrimps? Care for some advice?

CRS are more sensitive than other dwarf shrimp, I will suggest you try Cherry Shrimp first as that is the beginner shrimp, cheap and nice. When you able to breed them, can try selective breed, enhance the reddish to achieve a better grade - Sakura Shrimp

A right setup and proper cycling are the initial keys to success rearing shrimps, try to learn from the shrimp keeper here, read their posts, check out their blog, learn their tips and follow their step by step guidance.

Hope I'm not out of topic yet - Soil also play a big part that's why I start this thread to gather information.

    Good luck.
