Hi guys, I'm planning to build ADA style/rimless tank with dimension: w160xd70xh60 (16mm glass+tempered).

But I'm a bit confused with the filter system for tank, whether should I use SUMP or Canister filter (Eheim pro3).

    My questions are:

    1. Which one you guys think will be better suit my tank? As for using SUMP would reduce the aesthetic appearance of the tank. But then I know I will require less maintenance with SUMP.
    2. What about combine both of them? Coz I've already got a spare PRo3 ready to be use.
    3. Regarding the glass thickness, would it be sufficient to hold the tank pressure (it will be build rimless/ADA style), or should I used 19mm?

Thx for helping me figure out the best options here, thx again......

    Questions as below:

    1. Which one you guys think will be better suit my tank? As for using SUMP would reduce the aesthetic appearance of the tank. But then I know I will require less maintenance with SUMP.
Ans: Pros and Cons, but since you have the Pro3, use it, you need 2 canister to get better circulation of the tank, you need better flow rate system.

    2. What about combine both of them? Coz I've already got a spare PRo3 ready to be use.
Ans: As above. I find that canister is easier to handle when you want to change location for better circulation and less CO2 lost, if you notice Amano huge tank although he use sump but the plant he grow is low maintenance plant, not so demanding plant, you should know what i mean...

    3. Regarding the glass thickness, would it be sufficient to hold the tank pressure (it will be build rimless/ADA style), or should I used 19mm?
Ans: Go for the thickest, you don know how much the pressure will give and i saw one of Amano big tank rimless and there's slight bowing, best is sapphire in the front view.
Here's the picture of the tank bowing, Click >Here<

    Hope it helps!

Arowana is different from planted, this fish tends to hit against the wall sometimes. Also quality of glass is important also. Can see his tank is too small for so many Arowana, fighting for territory.

For planted tank, my suggestion is to go the canister way. More efficient in terms of CO2 usage.

An overflow system into a sump is nice and neat but has 2 disadvantages:
    1. CO2 escape - need to diffuse more to compensate.
    2. Still need to have a way to "suck" water from the bottom 3/4 of the tank - surface skimming only is not enough (in my opinion).

    Good luck with the setup.

It was shown before (I think it was George Booth) that if you seal the bio-tower, the CO2 levels will equilibrate with the tank. i.e. no CO2 lost.

Apologies. Did not know that there are bio-towers that are sealed. Did a search and found some examples.

I always thought sump systems are better for marine tanks because they provide many benefits (aerate the water, auto-water level, easier to clean mechanical filter, ...)

    Cheers

Thanks folks, I think i'll go for 2xpro3e cannister filter, hope it'll be enough to circulate the tank. But then it'll be another one month before I could start the setup process, coz my tank is still on the custom making process, I'm using Crystal Clear Glass.tm, did anyone ever heard of the brand? it's a semi crystal glass with a very low iron content, the company said it's made in USA (not sure actually) .

But they gave a 2 sample, one for the crystal glass, the other normal grade 1 glass, you could actually saw the huge different. but the problem with this glass, it'n only come with 8,10,12mm max so in order to gain enough strength to hold the 1.5 m tank, i need to laminate two 10mm(20mm) glass. What you guys think? will it be enough?

    Regards,

Your tank base dont use crystal glass, instead use better quality but even thicker glass.
