how badly infested is your tank? i paintakingly remove each snail physically once sighted. Averaging 3-4 a day.

What kind of snails are you having in your tank? Common pond, Ramshorn, MTS etc....

You may want to prevent overfeeding in your tank as this is the main reasons that they are growing in population in any tank... Getting a puffer may be just shifting the problem from left to right hand... [What happens when the puffer had cleared out all your snails?? Any shrimps/ slow moving fishes in there might be the next target for these curious puffers... ]

For me, they (Ramshorns) are also very effective in telling me when I need to do a water change for my tanks (whenever they keep on trying to crawl out of the water surface...) besides helping me to clean my tank of algae problems....

    Hope it helps...

    Beetlejuice,

Interesting use for your Ramshorns. I've also just noticed 1 snail in my tank today though I'm not sure where it came from as my tank has only moss, tied to driftwood and 2 stones and just today, I dropped half a ketapang leaf inside.

Is there any major harm having snails?

    Hi Andrew73,

any pics of the snail you spotted in your tank? One possibility could be there are snails' eggs on your moss/DW when you first intro into your tank & it had hatched - but the thing is, normally most snails don't just lay ONE egg per time, so do keep a lookout for more snails in the next few days

    Regards.

Snails that are found in the tank are actually being introduced accidentally through the introduction of new plants. Thus easy way of solving it is to buy a mini puffer that costs about 50 cents each and let them do the job of clearing the snails. After that, you may want to give away the puffer to someone else who has the snail problem because the puffer might take a bite of the fins of tetras if they are hungry and have no more snails to eat.

Hmm.. guess I'd rather have the safer option of having too much snails in my tank living with my shrimps/fishes safely than to have a fish (puffer) inside my tank that may prey on my shrimps/fishes when they are hungry...

    Just my 5 worthless cents...

I also have a tiny little snail (3mm big) in my shrimp tank. Came with the "water grass" plant (oops, what do you call it...) bought with the shrimps. Is it ok to leave it there? Just one. What harm would it do?

[actually the bag came with 2 tiny snails, but i threw one away, and kept one]

I think the snail has kicked the bucket. Saw it floating on the surface, following the flow of water from the pump! It was moving earlier. Shall check again in the morning and if it's dead, there it goes.

You made a good point regarding the eggs hatching though I'd have thought there would be more than 1 if that were the case. I shan't speak too soon! Hehe!

Ever wondered why some snails float on the water surface? Some snails have the ability to breathe air, so they float to the water surface.

The pond snails (otherwise known as tadpole/pouch snails) from the Physidae family, that you suddenly find in your tank, has this ability. They are also hermaprhodite (having both male and female sexual organs in a single snail) and some species are capable of self-fertilisation.

Therefore, it doesn't take much for the population to explode. However, the population has a relation with the amount of food available to them, the more food available the faster the population reproduces. So keep your excess food in check and the number of snails should be limited.

dont think it will cause too much harm...it will also eat worms or other foods...but of course its favourite food is snails...but like I mentioned, you can always give the puffer to someone else once it has done its job...hehehehe...

bought a bag of shrimps today, and came with a free snail.. again . keep or dispose?

I think you can dispose it. Snails are a bit of an eyesore if you have too many of it as it might breed without your knowledge...but just to ask...do snails eat the plants??

Hmm... I'm not sure. So far, the plants are still intact, so I don't know what it does! But then again, this snail is only 3mm in size... unless I haven't noticed because it's eating power is still tiny? Hahaha...

    Need some expert advice.

There many many species of aquatic snails. Different snails have their own different requirements (diet included).

If you can be specific about the type of snails that you have...

What is the shape of the shell like? There are many pictures of snails in AQ's Aquarium Photo Gallery...

    I agree with Morgan01.

Keep picking snails out whenever sighted.
Feed less i guess. i feed my fishes once a day.
In 2-3 weeks i see less snails, close to none.

I wouldnt dare try chemicals and stuff.
