I am looking to convert my 3ft bottom tier into 2-3 individual compartments for apisto/L333 fry growout tank/other pleco breeding projects...

Can any bros share how to construct relatively stable partiitions where I can still use a single canister for the filtration ofall 3 partitions? Note that Pleco Fry are still smallish and may escape if gaps are too big. (The alternative is of course multiple breeder traps, but I prefer to use the breeder traps for future spawns and am running out of space)...

Unsightly, but you can stuff white wool aroound the edges and holes.
Water will still pass but the partition may slant when you do water changes.
Wool between the glass and partition should be about 1.5" to 2" thick.
This will allow you to easily pull it into place with some tolerance to make sure no one sneaks through.
Again it will be very unsightly especially the colour of the wool.

I once used those transparent plastic dividers found at lfs to partition the tank. Further to that used a green small gap net to wrap the dividers.

With all these preparation and the dividers nicely snagged at the walls of the tank... somehow the shrimplets outsmarted me & went over the 'Berlin Wall'.

I think you probably got to dry the tank out. Cut 2 pieces of acrylic / glass and silicon it.

I would cut some verticle slits at the top of the separators so water can flow through them from chamber one to chamber 2. Keep the separator shorter than your tank height so that in the worst case, if the slits are stuck for any reasons, water can still overflow from the first chamber to the second (rather than to onto your floor )

So the concept is sort of like what you see in most sump compartments, except that the separators have some slits for water to flow to the next chamber.

I got those suction cup divider holders. Bought mine at Polyart for 80cents for a pack of 2. Problem was the bit that holds the divider is quite far off the front and back glass creating a gap for not just the fries but for adult fish to squeeze through. So I cut the middle section off ending up with 2 separate bits that press against the divider from opposite sides to hold the divider up. Hold your palms upright facing each other with a small gap between your palms. That is what the holder would look like with a pair in front and a pair at the back. If you want to play safe, a pair at the top and a pair at the bottom on both the front and back. Mine works with just one in the front and one at the back.

Then the dividers. I got mine from Dama in Ubi after a post by Eman. They cut to your requirements and have different thickness and colour (or transparent/semi-transparent). Not expensive. Mine for a standard 2 footer (foot and a half wide tank and about 2 foot high) was about $5 each. Very good service as well.

Problem is getting the dimensions just right. I ended up using two, one forced all the way up front and the other forced all the way to the back to block off the gaps.

Mine works well. Fries from two spawns by my kribs despite a few incidents.

Nice... Can you PM me the contact and location please...

Also, I note that there is previously a thread on a bro using a divider held up with suction cups and with filter wool at the bottom... can someone point it to me please?

That would be me in post # 03...
The idea is to use white wool in excess (perpendicular to partition) to block of the gaps.
Essentially, you end up with a "U" shape of wool around the partition.
This method still allows water through the partitions.
Regular partitions (two clips and a partition) sold at the LFS will work.
They should come in standard sizes to cover a 16" to 18" (depth and/or height) tank.

dama.com.sg is the website. Has the address and a map.

I looked at those at lfs. Those I saw had pretty large openings.

No problems with water flow but circulation is, of course, affected.
