Leaf shape suggest its could be a Nymphaea? If it is its definately a juvenile specimen. Mother plants grow up to 60cm tall in some cases. That being said - its not a defination I.D

    Anyone else's opinions?

It looks liked banana plant (Nymphoides Aquatica)... and yes, the new leaves will go all the way to the water surface. Eventually all the submerged leave will melt away and the new leaves will always reach the surface (at least in my case).

Attached 2 pictures for reference, 1 emersed and 1 submerged.

Trim the leaves before they hit the surface. Technically the plant should learn that "something not right" when its leaves keep getting trimmed off before they reach the surface. New leaves in theory will open lower down. Once one leaf hits the surface others will race to join it. So keep it trimmed if you want it to stay low and not block out the water surface ok.

Wow!! Never knew that banana plants can grown until its leaves can reach the surface... bought 1 & is in my crypt tank now for 10 days already... Spotted a growth of a new leaf so far...

For mine, I did not plant those 'bananas' into my substrate fearing that it might rot if i bury in the substrate... Hence I tied it to a piece of ceramic rings (act as an anchor to pull the banana plant down, if not it keeps on floating & gets swept around by the current in my tank...)... Anyone can advise if what I did is ok? Or any better suggestions? Thanks!!

What?!? Grew 4cm in 8 hours?!? Gosh! What you feed them?!? [Looks like I'm going to let my banana plant 'read' this thread to make it feel ashame...

Then what about the leaf you snipped off? Read from very old posts that such leaf, if you let it float in the tank will develop roots & in no time, you will have another banana plant... Voila!! [Guess this is how they propagate them... Will surely give it a try too if mine grows like yours at 4cm/8hour rate....]

    Cheers!!

and maybe WonderGro works wonder. i don know, just dose red today and green tomorrow and repeats.

Ask Ben from Mizu world, he upsold me the ferts when i bought plants from him!

This is the part i snipped off. It has already dried up!

However, another new stem is growing upwards!

Looks like the ferts working pretty well or maybe the lights are too strong!

    Hi LM,

I'm very amazed by your super fast growth rate of the banana plant in your tank... Could it be due to your light intensity?

From your pics, it looks like you'd completely 'buried' those bananas look-alike roots of this plant in the substrate... Is that ok for the plant - will those roots rot off? [Read from some older threads that just need to bury 0ne-third of these roots in the substrate leh...]

Mind sharing what fert regime you provide for this tank(plant)? My banana plant's growth rate is imply pathetic... Even got new growth, it always 'melt' before it can fully open... Thinking if it has to do with my water parameters...

    Many thanks!!

    Hi,

This is how my banana plant looks like 1 week ago. There are currently a few more stems growing out. I think in total 6 leaves floating already. I am only dosing wonder-gro once a week. 8 hours light/day and CO2. I am not sure how it manages to grow so well but the plant is healthy and no root issues. Maybe because i have Powersand as base Ferts.
