I have a female crowntail betta who hasnt been herself lately. She lives in a 2 feet community tank with a male crowntail and some cardinal tetras.Usually she would be very active and always looking for food at the bottom of plants or exploring nooks and crannies in my tank. One more thing, she has been pregnant with eggs for quite some time now and hasnt released them yet.

But lately her behaviour has changed. She spends most of her time on the substrate or other places resting and I notice she has trouble keeping herself steady/upright.I also notice she cant seem to float well. She just sinks like a lead weight. She tends to fall to one side while resting. Also I havent noticed her pooping lately. She still eats normally and can swim up and is able to take air from the surface as usual then after that sinks to the bottom again.

The male crowntail and the cardinal tetras in the same tank are in perfect health btw.Can someone help me pinpoint what's wrong with her and how to treat her?

    Thanks bros!

    Hi,

I think your betta is not pregnant. Are there dark verticle bars on her body, if so, it is a sign that she's carrying eggs.

However a bloated stomach without the bars and trouble swimming points to something else... based on your description, I think it is more likely she has some sort of internal bacteria infection.

One medication you could try is Interpet's Anti Internal Bacteria, but I think the medication will cost more than the female betta.

is there a possibility that the bacteria causing the internal bacteria spread to the other community fishes?

My honest suggestion is not to keep both male and femal bettas together. Betta spawning is very aggressive and stress for both the male and female. I will assume with community fishes together with the bettas in the tank, the male is unable to build his bubblenest with peace. My take is that the female is totally stressed out by the male, try seperating the female into a hospital tank. She should recover.

I agree with Rav, it's never a good idea to keep male and female bettas together. It's extremely stressful to both, and a stressed betta is a sick betta. If you have a hospital tank to move her to, it would be a very good idea. Treating her will do no harm even if she's not actually physically ill. I have found that eSHa 2000 is a great medication to use for bettas. As well as treating a miriad of different diseases, it works well in cases of stress too. It's one thing I always have in my fish cupboard!

She could be bloated or she has a swimbladder problem. You shold remove her to another tank and treat her on some medication just in case or the other fish might get sick too.

sad to hear that. I also do find it hard to diagnose EXACTLY what is wrong with my previous bettas. They died in a still position unlike most of the other types of fishes.

I was reading a book on bettas just now at the library and happened to see a pic of a betta with a tumour. It looked exactly like mine...I've never heard of fish having tumour though.

My betta did happen to encounter a tumour too,its is really hard to cure,by the time u can see the tumour its is also quite obvious that they are on the way to Betta Heaven,i would suggest in trying the Furan-G Medication for internal parasite,i heard of some cases that heal it
