    hi bclee

actually there is a rule of thumb to this....I cannot remember but it is something like 1 to 2 watts per gallon. I think the dennerle website has a calculator for substrate heater.....for a 4 ft tank, a 50watts will do...but if you intend to just leave it on 24/7, just under-rate it to the next level down and regulate it with an AC fan

Kasselmann suggests a nutrient-rich base with good aeration (substrate heater and Malayan trummpet snails recommended) and little organic matter (humus).

Can someone enlighten me on this :
Do plant roots carry oxygen through them or do they need to breath?

jacian....i believe that the roots will transport oxygen to the substrate during photo period....the substrate heater (to force water and thus oxygen and nutients exchange) and trumpet snails (aiding the process and perhaps eat dead rotting roots?) is to prevent anaerobic pockets that may spread....

Any idea if this book can still be bought now? If yes, where and roughly how much?

locally you can only get this book via the net... and it cost a lot... check with Nicky if he has already placed an order for the book. He can also give you more up to date price and availability info.
