Newly setup tank?
I just got some cherry shrimps in a 2ft tank. The shrimps are all staying in one corner and there are like 1 to 2 deaths for the past 3 days. The ammonia and nitrite level are 0ppm. Not sure about the pH though. After I do a bit of water change like 10% to 20% they are active then a few hours later they go one corner hide again. Is it pH spike? I using used ADA amazonian as substrate and only mosses.
Newly setup tank?
How long did you cycled your tank?

Cycling like 1 mth plus? But because I got a fan, I used to top up with tap water during this period. I swap my canister 2 days back with a old one I have been running on another tank. The ammonia and nitrite readings were taken 1 to 2 hours back and read 0ppm. Readings may be flawed of course but with my whole tank full of growing moss and bits of hair algae here and there, I don't think the benefical bacteria ain't enough to handle the bioload
? Another thing is when I did the water change, the trumpet snails also came out of the substrate. I do use a de-chlorinater with the new water I am pouring in. I suspect either it's the pH or maybe temperature? The temperature did went down to 23.5 degrees only yesterday.

why don't you do a pH test first? Temperature is fine, as long as around the range of 22C to 31C. Also, best to age your water overnight after de-chlorine.
I forgot to get a pH test kit when I rushed to C328 earlier. Anyone can lend me for a while??? Aging water is not an option cause my mum would screw me big time if I did that

It could be better off spending your money on candies and ice-creams rather then on shrimps if you cant age water.

It's not as hard or troublesome as you think. You just need a pail and an acrylic cover. And maybe an empty space for the pail's base diameter. Good luck.
I am not surprised that someone like in your case says he or she is breeding certain species of shrimps without aging water.
But if one is meeting problem with shrimps after water change, aging of water will prevent that or/and use a shrimp friendly declorinator will be needed.

You could use Prime.

i was about to ask that question too
btw, why is other than Prime not shrimp friendly?
I am new to shrimps too, would like to find out more.
not breeding, just happened that the sakura shrimps was berried when bought. New to shrimps, may be just lucky, though have taken precaution by mixing with declor first before putting in the tap water.

Thank for sharing, to different people, shrimps doing good has different defination. Some when see female berried, they say is good. Some see fries, they say is good. Some see grown up fries, then they say is good.

I think as long as you use water conditioners which removes both chlorine and chloramine you should be fine even if you don't age your water. SeaChem Prime is good for this since it remove both.
Are there any fish that threatens the shrimps? Is there anything like say a driftwood or something that is leeching toxic materials like copper into the tank? Are you using one of those "china-made" chillers? If you are and they are more than a year old, I suggest getting a new one since I have heard from one of the LFS uncles that they leech copper into the water after a while. Copper is toxic to shrimps.

cool it, silane. we all know that you are shrimp expert![]()
To novice shrimp keepers like me and pork life, the 'definition' of good of course means not dying lah.
Was just worried that Pork life would really stop the hobby and go buy candy instead when you gave him the harsh expert advice on aged waterthat's why i quickly post that mine is still not dying even i didn't use AGED water. Just like that only. Not challenging your expertise lah. Cool it, man. why so
?
