I remembered seeing a suspended tank once on the Internet. It was quite sometime ago. But it was really jaw dropping looking at the pics.
Hi All, needed some advice on wooden cabinet.
I keep a 422 with wooden cabinet. Had to change my cabinet because the wood structure was not very sound after I accidentally spill some water during water change. Yesterday while changing water, I noticed that my new wood cabinet has the same problem again. The opening/closing of door is now slightly blocked by the top panel of wood now. Those are cheapo woods I believed.
I am very concerned of the safety of the structure. Is there any good alternatives to wooden cabinet besides metal stand? Choose wooden cabinet mainly because of aesthetics reasons.
Thanks.

Hehe...
I will forever be anxious if I suspend my 422 from the ceiling.
Besides wood and metal, next in line should be plastic, those strong, industrialised type.
Personally, I still prefer wooden cabinet; just need to invest more on better quality. Does your new cabinet comes with a warranty?
Warning: All posts are based on personal experience with no creditable validation whatsoever...
Suspended tank from ceiling? Omg! That would be "hair-raising" for me
No warranty for the cabinet bro.
I remembered seeing some other bros uses Metal Stand but covered with wood to make it look like wood cabinet (but don;t know how to make those)
What would be the better grade of wood for aquarium use? Anyone able to share with me the estimated cost of building one for 422 tank?
Thanks.
Go for chengai wood structure. They are corossion free. But For a decent 4x2x2 cabinet will cost at least $450-750 depend on workmanship. Invest in something that is lasting. Kapur wood structure is other alternative but not as strong & durable like chengai. Buy cheapo cabinet at you own risk.
what ever wood you choose make sure it is not compressed wood. they will bloat when touch water (ikea type of furniture)
What plants to use???? Arggggg......
actually its more like they will bloat like all wood will if you leave water to soak into them, just that once that happens, they disintegrate must faster
If you wipe it off and dry it as soon as it is wet..it should be safe. Using ikea stuff with my tank, so far so good. I just make sure i dont leave any water on it. Like what people do when they handle their laminated or other type of wooden flooring
Found some picture of suspended tanks for your viewing pleasure. Personally I find that it look good on its own but with the inlet/outlet... CO2 reactor... etc the magic of it being suspended is kindda lost.

Thanks all for the kind advice.
Anyone has any idea what would be the price for Kapur wood cabinet for 422 size?
Or anyone who knows how/where to improvise a metal stand with wood panels all over it so it looks like a wooden cabinet (but with strong structural support within)?
hi again muak,
From your threads, seems like you are using normal cabinets? Most tank makers use kapur wood. Just look for weeyang to get a good quote.
recently my cabinet also bloated at the corners...
material used looks like those chip board or compress wood...
now wonder what should I do, to change to steel legs or just use the cabinet till it is unsightly...then change..
Hi bro, my 2 cents since we both share the same problem...
Besides being an unsightly, my bigget concern is on the safety aspect. My tank sitting in my living area and my kids are always playing there. It would be disastrous if one day the cabinet choose to collapse suddenly.
But then again depending how serious is your case. I am having difficulty to close the wooden door so I guess my situation is more severe.
I also have some problem with 1 side of the door..
sianz... best thing is this tank not at my place.. in my in-law's place..
spend money to beautify their house..![]()
Hi,
I am currently using a wooden cabinet for my 6x2x2.
It is with me for more than 3 years. So far so good
It is made of ply wood and solid wood (not sure what kind) for the pillar. It is the placement of the ply and solid wood that makes the cabinet strong. I had 6 pillar poles and the rest are all ply wood.
IMHO, as long as the ply wood does not get wet. It is ok to use ply wood![]()
