i remember seeing an article in one of those fish hobby magazines. Long long ago, when our hobby was still in it's prehistoric form, they used to have aquariums with no filter, no artificial lights (just sunlight), needless to say no ferts and CO2. And the fishes and plants thrived. Now that is the true low tech.

There is a difference between low-tech and no-tech. Below is just my understanding, by no means definition.

No tech: Unplugged. Sunlight, no fertilizer (or just substrate tabs or manure), sand, gravel, mud, soil, no filter, little or no water change.
Low-tech: DIY CO2, mid-low lights, filter, little or no fertilizer, little water change.
Mid-tech: Pressured CO2, fan, mid-light, regular dosing, some filtration, regular water change.
High-tech: Pressured CO2, heater/chiller, high light, high fertilizer, potent substrate (base fertilizer, ADA, GEX, onyx etc), oversized filter (or sump), pH Controller, computer monitor, frequent water change.

Many times, it is not so clear cut and there will be cases where they fall in between. I guess most fall into mid-tech.

To me, low-tech means Diana Walstad's style. Basically something like :
    - using soil as base fert,
    - no injected CO2,
    - no extra dosing except from fish food,
    - no water changes,
    - can use artificial lighting,
    - can use filter or pump for water circulation

Erm,to me low tech means bare base with low tech plants like java moss, java fern, etc. No filter, just some fishes maybe 1 or two,no fertilizers but with lighting say maybe a 36watts lighting. Also the moss and java fern must be able to grow
