I've gotten a layer of bubbles on the underside of the water surface! Does that mean that the water is oily or is it normal? Quite unsightly but more concerned about how it affects the tank and it's occupants.

    Help or ideas anyone? Thanks!

Planted tank? You can install surface skimmer. In my opinion the surface oil will prevent O2 from atmosphere enter the water, thus will affect your fauna.

    What fishes are you keeping?
Could it be a bubble nest?

It's a low tech tank, only moss and driftwood. I've got 5rasboras, 6 black neons, a couple of Yamato's and Malayans and recently, a common snail that layed eggs which are thankfully, not hatching. Either that or I just can't see the new snails!

I notice this happens more after I do a water change and add the water conditioner.

Ok, so confirm it is not a bubble nest based on your list of fauna.
I agree with Robert, it is most likely surface film / oil.

You could try using a surface skimmer or adding a couple of mollies or putting an air stone which you can turn on during lights off period. All 3 will help.

How do I add on the air stone? I use an Eheim 2008 filter, not sure how I can isolate the airflow to the air stone. Not too keen on mollies though as I prefer lower maintenance fish! Didn't realise moss produces oil!

    Thanks!

    Hi Andrew,

do you have one of those air pump? If have, then just connect an airstone to it & dump into the tank....

    Regards.

PS: How's the snails doing? Did they breed like mad while you were away??

Actually, I don't have an air pump but the filter has an outlet that creates water flow-is that the same?

Only saw 1 baby snail but that bugger is growing fast, I gotta say! The eggs have kind of disappeared-maybe the Yamato's feasted on them? Will keep an eye for more. Perhaps I can make some $$$ selling regular snails? Haha!

Got meself an external battery operated air pump and attaching an air stone to it BUT it's pretty noisy AND I'd have to keep buying batteries for it and not use my rechargeables so anyone keen on a battery operated air pump? Will get another one, hopefully, one that's more silent. The bubbles seem to have dissipated over the last few days. I wonder what happened...
