Hi, does anyone keep a land crab here?
Im thinking of setting up a tank housed with crab only.. prefer in sand substrate..
I read that some land crab need to go into water periodically to release their egg or for any other reason..

I need help in setting up the tank.. terrarium style(freshwater) would be the best..

I have seen such setups before, It is the same as any terrarium, just that you need a pool for it to submerge itself for a while. You need a strong net cover to over the tank, many of them are really good climbers and escapist.

Too bad it's in German, but you get some ideas from the pictures. These guys have really really great tanks for the terrestrial crabs. Although not always possible, try to find out the actual species of the crab first as some species may have their own unique requirements.

I saw 2 tanks of crabs in Y618. They are a few different species in there. You may want to check it out if you're shopping for crabs. Nice website by the way. Love the setup.

Seems like all the crab is brackish to me..
Never have any experience on keeping brackish livestock before..

    anyone keep crab in freshwater?
I wonder if we still need filtration when the water is of very little amount, maybe we just change the water weekly?

Not all of them. As far as I know, Geosesarma spp., Parathelphusa spp. that are mostly freshwater crabs.

Use Babelfish or Google language tool to translate from German to English. Although it is not perfect and reading can be difficult, there are pointers that can be picked up from those pages.

    Have fun.

I bought a vampire crab, it is a land crab. It supposedly even gave birth to fully formed crab at the fish store and they had the little itty baby crabs to prove it. I keep it in a partially 2/3 submerged enviroment with lava rocks emergent with moss and fern growing on the rocks.

I bought it at C328, but I have seen it being sold in Y618. It has orange eyes and a purple body, it is also a good explorer, so keep the tank very well covered, mine died from that, it climbed up the silicone in the corner.

The Christmas Island Land Crab (Gecarcoidea natalis) is a protected species. It is doubtful that it will be found for sale locally. But who knows? Maybe someone found a way to export them?

I was at Plaza Singapura last week and went by the aquarium "store" in the basement. There was a tank with crabs marked "Christmas Island Crabs" or words to that effect. Can't tell if they were the real McCoy but they were red.

Probably Thai crabs? I understand there are red crabs from Thailand in the aquarium trade, they do look similar to Gecarcoidea natalis.

Yes, I have seen Terrapotamon abbotti for sale in Singapore before. But that was in the 90s! I would love to see these lovely crabs again.
