I am currently using an Ocean free hang on filter for my 2 feet planted tank.
But recently got an eheim canister 2211. but firstly the flow is way too srong for my tank, causing alot of churing. and also because my tank does not have a background, all the hoses are visible so it looks quite unsightly.

So im considering to use back a hang on filter, to change to an Eheim liberty 2040 or 2041. Is the flow of Eheim much stronger than the Ocean free?
Im looking for better filtration than the Ocean free, but not as strong as the 2211 canister.

    Thanks.

Many people are using a 2213 for their 2 footers and find it okay, since the 2211 is smaller I really don't see the problem. What kind of medium have you got in your 2211? If it is too stong it might be because that there is not enough filter media. Also you can try pointing the rainbar towards the glass. Or even have it pointed towards the length of the tank.

    Hi Cheetf,

thanks for you advice. I am just using the white foam and bio rings as my medium, which came together with the canister. is it sufficient?
But if i were to use a hang on filter like the eheim liberty, do you think it is sufficient for my tank. because the height of my tank ain't that tank. maybe 30 to 40 cm.

Hard to say, is the medium filled up and packed to the top?

I cannot tell you about the eheim hang on filters as I have no experience with them. I prefer canisters.

I'm using 2215 for 2ft tank I even use 2217 before when my tank is heavily planted, so 2211 can't be that strong. at least not to my liking

Yap i been using Ehiem Liberty HOF 200 as a add on for my 2ft Tank ,its pretty good and powerful enough to what i thought, very silent and the flowrate you can adjust from 350L-760L/Hr which is kinda strong and i love the part where the outlet of the waterflow was divided into 2 section where they come out which the water flow is quite evenly distributed as compared to those other brand HOF,but afterall i will still recommend you to go for a Ehiem cannister 2215 classic as you can still control the flow from the outlet if you attach a valve to it

    Hi everyone,

I also would like some advice, I'm thinking of setting up a new 2ft tank and I'm not sure if a typical hang-on filter is sufficient or do I need to get an external ehiem canister filter? Are there any factors that I would need to consider (eg, planted tank)?

I would sure recommend you to go for a cannister if you can as the flowrate can always be adjust to cater to your need
