have you managed to acclimitize them to dried food yet Tangfan? Mine are vehemently refusing to take anything other than live/frozen foods

mine takes JBL bits, frozen bloodworms, frozen brine shrimps and frozen mysis. favourite still frozen bloodworms though.
it helps that i have 2 adult turqs and 5 altums to show the way![]()
Cheers,
Melvin Lim

mine took flakes, with the help of the altums. The heckels were so curious about the altums behavior and decide to see what they were eating at the surface.after a few tries, they too join in the feast
I've got cories and tetras in the QT tank with them to "help" them. Today is day 2 of starvation/only feeding pellets...hope they will learn soon enough.
I'm afraid that they'd get so hungry that they attack/kill their tankmates for food!
Simon and Melvin, I'm glad you guys have successfully kept Heckles with Altums...it's my plan to introduct them to the same tank after my long QT of each species is done...the American forums recommend against it and I was a little worried

I think as long as we take care of the water parameters and supply of food, mixing them should be ok since those two seems to live in similar water parameters? There's a school of thought that angels and discus should never mix but mine are so far so good! *touch wood*.

they think that the parasite that live off the altums will eventually do harm to the heckels. However, it didn't happen in my case. My discus died because of the addition of a new member in the family (my sis-in-law) which spook them out so bad till it killed them. Had a total of 3 heckels, 2 blue face and 2 RSG. However, the RSG took the change better than the heckels which was more timid.
With no disrespect intended...
What did your sis-in-law do to your heckels??

it breaks the daily routine which everyone has, even the discus got used to having us. But with the addition, things change... there is more movement (no sis-in law isn't working) more noise. these will causes stress. My blue face heckel did the 'shark', dorsal fin out of the water surface, swam in circle and do a deep dive. I once heard a splash and found one of them on my day bed beside my 6footer
My Altums & My Discus

Wow so serious? Did your sis-in-law keep appearing in front of the tank or something? I know my heckels get spooked when we appear suddenly, make loud/sudden foot steps or if my cat come pace in front of them.
I think the concern with altums vs heckels is the dominant nature of the altums and the timid nature of the heckels results in bullying and intimidation of the heckels, which may result in the heckels wasting away. That's what I gathered anyway.

If it is anything out of the ordinary, it will stress them. However, if you begin with a noisy family then once your fishes get accustom to your family then I don't see a problem, but the fish will take more time to stablise, so please don't go bang on the wall of the tank, fish under stress gets sick easily.
I also suggest providing enough covering for them to hide, they will feel secure. I used echinodorus with hugh leaves (eg. E. rubin, E. rose) and more at the back of the tank. My tank is viewable from 3 sides

The discus are no push overs. They too can be aggressive, but because of their slower feeding habits, they tend to lose out during feeds. I fed the discus with beefheart as the altums don't go for them
I use hanging bogwood to create cover for them. they also like to hide behind the filter intake of the HOB used for the QT tank.
I'll be feeding a mix of floating and sinking NLS pellets when they go into the same tank. The Altums much prefer to take floating foods, while the discus prefer to pick from the bottom. Hope this allows both to feed at their preferred locations with minimal bullying![]()
