Depend on what type of fishes you keep, some fishes might require airpump.

as long as you don't overload your bioload, lots of plants and growing well, I think you can get away without air pump

I think it should be as long as you underload your bioload, lots of plants growing, you can get away without air pump. Always remember that in a lot of planted tanks, CO2 are provided in addition to no air pump. And plants only photosynthesize when there's light. When the lights are off, plants use oxygen too.

i use it only when medicating my fish...some medications reduce the dissolved oxygen in water, and the heater i usually use in conjunction with medication also reduces dissolved oxygen.

Maybe you want to tell us what/quantity of fish you keep, how big your tank, setup...
I'm using ohf & there's not much fish in my tank. The water flowing back creates some aeration which is sufficient for my fish.
You can always guage by looking at your fish to see if they breathing hard.

No, I have a planted tank and i dont use air pump. But previously yes. Therotically highly oxygenated tanks keep certain algaes at bay so to speak.

I do have one but its kept as spare...just in case my filter breaks down. Use it too when I acclimatise the fish in my other tank.

Ya, I probably read the same thing Bro Torque6 about keeping algae at bay. Think its due to the added water movement and the oxygen aiding the development of BB.

Yup, quite true. I did have a tank once that have undergravel filter and air pumps. Highly rich oxygen and a lot of water movement. No algae on the wood or rocks whatsoever although the tank gets direct sunlight a lot. Only thing is it gets green water.

green water is algae. I saw lots of algae at Biotop shop, they do use air pump. So if the theory is true than there shouldn't be algae at Biotop shop tank.

I belive algae issues are more complex than that.
