I bought a mountain shrimp a month ago and only seen it twice, it lives in a piece of bogwood. It has shred its skin as we found the evidence in the tank. Is it normal for them to nocturnal? He is a very dark colour now and used to be orange I'm not sure if if this is normal? any ideas guys?

They're also known as wood shrimps and many other names or Atyopsis moluccensis to be specific.

I've those in my tank. Mine's the same as yours in terms of colour. It seem that as when they age, it would mold and the new set of shell would turn from red to brown. Yeh, they hide rather well in the day and only come out at night to bask facing my outflow pipe.

Yup it can grow rather big but among all the shrimps, its the most relax one. All it does is face the outflow and open its 'satellite' to capture. Though they're huge, I don't find my plants being uprooted. Thus I suspect they really don't move that much - hide and come out using the shortest route and probably very very slow. Sort of like a statue if not for opening and closing its 'satellite'.

    Hi all you fishy people!
Thanks for your replies re Mountain Shrimp, I guess I will check each dat that he is still alive and will catch a glimpse of him now and again!
My tank is looking good at the moment and we have lots of babies (12), I don't know what do to with them all when they get bigger! They are all Platties.
Does anyone else have problems with lots of baby fish and what to do with them?

Saw them at Polyart yesterday too, they're huge compared to my Red Cherries

About 3.5cm to 5cm long the ones they are selling.

Are mountain shrimps very sensitive to water conditions?

i have a mountain shrimps in my 1 ft low tech, and it died out of a sudden. my other sakuras and cherries are fine. Anyway, i have a place for it to hide. will it die out of stress?
