    Hi folks,

    just checking.

is a 6mm thick 4feet tank strong enough for a planted tank? tank is 4x1.5x1.5

i understand that higher the water level, more water pressure, n' higher risk of glass breaking.

Question: does the gravel weight contributes to the pressure stress?

i personally feel that 6mm is only for 3ft and below. for anything larger, 8mm and thicker is recommended.

    hi lance

are you refering to the side glass alone or do you mean the base glass as well?

if the tank is a 4x1.5x1.5, a 6mm will do fine provided if the base pieces is at least 1cm thick. There should be a minimum of 3 top brace, 2 at the corners and one in the middle...some thank makers have just the centre brace but that would be a really big piece.

It also depends on the kind of fish you keep....if they do get big, chances likely it you maybe better off getting one that is thicker all round.

Just sharing my experience. I have a 4'(L)x2'(B)x1.5'(H) tank, 6mm side, 10mm base with 3 brace. This tank used to house one pink gaint gourami until it out grown the tank; shift it to a pond. It was left unused for about one year, drain dry left out in the sun. Next it house a RTG which grow from about 8inches to about 20inches until I shift it to a pond. Now it houses about 20x4inch Congo and 8x6inch Siliver dollar. I think the tank is more than 5 yr old. No problem so far. Got it from Soon Heng 88.

perhaps i should have quantified the meaning of bigger fish....those that can get quite nasty like ...Oscars, Arowanas........i have seen once a small little girl smacking the glass of an Arowana tank...think the fish got really irritated and it smacked the glass and was really LOUD...Think the 6mm glass is not going to take the whack from such a fish....
