Now I'm worried. My 5 ft tank from Bioplast has no bracing at all except for 2 long strips of glass silicon-ed along the top length of the front and back glass.

Not to make the fish shop owners look bad, but shops like Bioplast were around for only a very short time. Before, they were a hardware store selling parts like valves and all.

Roy, if I were you, I will check the tank every now and then. Stand on the side and take a good look. Is the front piece of glass bending? If not, you have nothing to worry about. At least, they had the good sense to brace the tank along the lengths.

Thanks thanks timebomb...overkilling the tank is better than killing me! LOL---------------
Well, I suppose that's true. But Peter, if I were you, I will re-consider. Although having over-thick glass does no harm, it's not nice. A small tank with very thick glass would not look good. Better think again or you may regret when you get the tank.

Well....having a planted tank is suppose to be a relaxing experience...it seems now to be more of a stress with things going wrong...LOL..maybe its the fundamentals that are not done properly. Eg. Getting a stable and long lasting tank

For the sake of discussion, I don't see how strips of glass silicon-ed along the length of the front and back glass achieve any support. Please note the strips of glass aren't connected to each other or to the sides.

Proper bracing, I would think, is joining front and back glass with strip(s) of glass.

    Any thoughts?

    Cheers,
    Roy

Attaching the glass strip along the whole length of the front glass is also a form of bracing. It prevents the front glass from bowing.

Is your tank one of those imported from Europe? Those are quite reliable tanks.

Peter, you're right! This hobby is getting more and more stressful by the day. Nah, just kidding but still too many things to watch out for.

Think of your plastic ruler. It is very flexible. If you stick a piece of plastic along the ruler perpendicularly, you can no longer flex the ruler as before.

The idea is to prevent the glass from flexing rather than physically holding the glass together.

Half the fun is figuring out the details. I have always believed that the planted tank hobby wouldn't have been so popular if it was easy. Although it isn't rocket science either, you have to have quite a fair amount of knowledge before you can succeed. Not to belittle anyone, but you would notice that planted tanks are more popular among the more well-educated group.

In short, I wouldn't have kept a planted tank if it was easy. When it's easy, it's no fun. When it's too easy, it becomes damn boring.

    Hi everyone,

Just to share that those five plan tanks all tend to bend... don't know about the nisso tanks. My Glass tank seems okay though but will check now.

    Just sharing.

don't think you have to be worried.
those 2 strips are meant to minimise any flexing of glass.

the bioplast tanks are very sturdy
the braces run all along the sides, stopping flexing more effectively than one centre brace does

kl, you should have seen their tanks when u went there
i'm surprised you doubt the quality

    anyway roy, just relax
you paid your money's worth, and it's worth it

    thin glass tends to bend
if you have a 4ft tank and the glass bends, either get a new brace, or metal frames, or drain the tank and make a new one
    trust me
4ft tanks like to burst in the middle of the night []
